PUPPETATIONAL:

The curmudgeonly Walter is coming to the Greensboro Coliseum today. So is the dimwitted Bubba J. And the politically incorrect Achmed the Dead Terrorist. And the oddball Peanut. And the also-un-P.C. Jose Jalapeno. Oh, and Jeff Dunham will be there too, giving life to his puppet creations. Dunham is bringing his “Spark of Insanity” comedy tour to Greensboro, following two top-selling DVDs, hit Comedy Central specials and plenty of YouTube appearances. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7. Tickets are $41.50 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 336-722-6400.

BUBBLY:

It took a real bubble brain — and we mean that in the most flattering way — to come up with Bubblebration, a free gathering at 1 p.m. Friday at Corpening Plaza in which the general public is invited to gather and … blow bubbles. Babies do it naturally, but kids and adults need to bring the bubble-blowing device of their choosing — anything from a rock-show bubble machine to gum to those little doodads that you dip in a soapy solution to send bubbles flying. Pointless, you say? Not really, groucho. For times such as these, a simple act of mindless fun can be a perfect antidote. Visit www.myspace.com/wsbubble.

WHAT LURKS UNDER ROCKS:

Scavenger hunts can be a lot of fun. They bring out the amateur sleuth, if not archaeologist, in all but the most humbug among us. All of which leads to the first Scene in Winston-Salem Scavenger Hunt — part game, part race and part city tour. The hunt will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday and will begin at the Winston-Salem Visitor’s Center on Brookstown Avenue. Teams of two will be given clues that lead them to various downtown destinations where they will perform tasks. At the end of the hunt, there will be a party and awards ceremony. The cost is $20, and proceeds will benefit the Meade Willis Downtown Redevelopment Loan Fund of the Downtown Winston-Salem Foundation. For more information, visit www.scenein

GET MAD:

The acclaimed AMC drama Mad Men comes to DVD Tuesday, depicting life among Madison Avenue advertising executives in 1960s New York. They carouse, they swill whiskey and they smoke like chimneys all while finding new ways to appeal to mass consumerism. The focus is on Don Draper (Jon Hamm, who won a Golden Globe for his role), a charmer with a secret past. True to the show’s fascination with advertisements and retro designs, the DVD set comes in an eye-catching limited edition case designed to look like an oversized cigarette lighter. Ring-a-ding-ding.

SUPER HUMANS:

Forget the faux angst of the X-Men, or Spider-Man’s constant whining about the great responsibility that comes with his great power. The kids in Demo, a black-and-white indie comics hit from writer Brian Wood and artist Becky Cloonan, demonstrate what gaining superpowers would really do to person’s psyche, sense of well-being or view of the world. The original 12-issue miniseries came out in 2003-04, and was released this week in a trade paperback from Vertigo Comics. A follow-up miniseries is due out later this year.
