■ Nicole Kidman gave birth in Nashville, Tenn., yesterday to a baby girl named Sunday. In a statement e-mailed to The Associated Press, Paul Freundlich, a publicist for her husband, Keith Urban, said: "Sunday Rose Kidman Urban weighed 6 pounds, 71/2 ounces. Husband Keith was by Nicole's side and mother and baby are very well." The baby is the first for Kidman and Urban, who got married in June 2006. She has two children, Isabella and Connor, from her marriage to Tom Cruise. Kidman and Urban, who were both raised in Australia, have a home in Nashville.
■ Soprano Joan Sutherland, 81, is recovering well after breaking both legs in a fall at her Swiss home, her agent said yesterday. "She had an accident while doing the gardening, and somehow managed to break both her legs," agent David Sigall said. She is in a Swiss hospital undergoing rehabilitation, Sigall said from London. "She has been moved to the rehabilitation section," he said, adding that Sutherland would probably remain there for up to eight weeks before being allowed to put weight on her legs. "All is well except I'm sure she's not pleased," said Sigall. The accident occurred June 24 as Sutherland, an Australian, was picking flowers in the garden and lost her balance, said an assistant reached at Sutherland's home near Montreux.
■ Christie Brinkley, testifying yesterday at her divorce trial in New York, said that it was a "nightmare" to put on a brave face and throw a birthday party with 30 children after learning that her husband had an affair with a teenager. However, she said that such homespun family celebrations are part of a lifestyle that means the world to her. "That's the only thing I've ever wanted," she said. "That's the most important thing -- to have a big, happy family." Brinkley, 54, said she tried to spare her two young children the messy details of the breakup, including her discovery of husband Peter Cook's Internet pornography habits. The two married Sept. 21, 1996, after a whirlwind courtship of about five months. Now, they are arguing over custody of the children, ages 10 and 13. Alexa Ray Joel, Brinkley's daughter with "Piano Man" singer Billy Joel, is 22.
■ Andre Norton, one of science fiction's most prolific female writers who died three years ago, intrigued her readers by creating fantasy worlds. By design or accident, she left her friends and fans a final puzzle: Who should control the rights to her more than 130 books, including the popular Witch World series. Like a plot out of a novel, conflicting claims have erupted over the copyrights and royalties of Norton's work. One comes from the woman who cared for Norton in her later years, the other from a fan who says he is better suited to care for Norton's literary legacy. As courts sort out the disputes, Norton's unpublished works are on hold.
