'Stallions,' filmed in the Triad, stars the Rooneys
Lost Stallions: The Journey Home (Unrated): This family film was shot in Winston-Salem and other parts of the Triad last summer, and made its theatrical debut in Greensboro back in June. The story follows a troubled teen who is sent to a horse ranch in 1969 to straighten out his life. Mickey and Jan Rooney star as the owners of the ranch. Lost Stallions was directed and produced by David Rotan, a graduate of the UNC School of the Arts.
Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert (G): Teen sensation Cyrus and her pop-star alter ego Hannah Montana headlined a sold-out concert tour, which was then turned into a sold-out movie at theaters. The two-disc DVD set comes with both 2-D and 3-D versions of the film, plus four pairs of 3-D glasses. Extras include bonus songs and a featurette on Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers.
Street Kings (R): Keanu Reeves and Forest Whitaker star in this crime thriller about a widowed cop implicated in the death of another officer. A double-disc version includes deleted scenes and featurettes; a bare-bones single-disc version is also available.
Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior (Unrated): This straight-to-DVD release is a prequel to the 2002 film The Scorpion King, which in turn was a prequel to the 2001 film The Mummy Returns. This one tells the origin story of Mathayus (played by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in the 2001 and 2002 films, and by Michael Copon here), a warrior in ancient Mesopotamia. We know that he will end up as a poorly done CGI half-scorpion by the time The Mummy Returns comes along, but he is blissfully unaware as he pursues his destiny here.
Wizard of Gore (Unrated): Crispin Glover is well cast in the lead role of this horror remake, about a deranged stage performer named Montag the Magnificent. The 1970 original, from noted horror director Herschell Gordon Lewis, was known for its gruesome images; the remake also doesn't skimp on the bloodshed. Montag's victims are played by members of Suicide Girls, an online pinup site known for its goth and punk models.
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (PG-13): Frances McDormand stars in the title role as a frumpy governess whose outspoken self-righteousness gets her fired from job after job. Destitute, she cons her way into a gig as social secretary for a ditzy actress (Amy Adams). The DVD has deleted scenes, commentary and two featurettes.
Prom Night (PG-13 and Unrated versions): Brittany Snow stars in another horror film remake, about a girl who survives a massacre. Three years later, the killer comes back to finish the job on the eve of senior prom. Extras include deleted scenes, an alternate ending and commentary.
6 Films To Keep You Awake (Unrated): This three-disc set has a marathon of new Spanish horror films, each accompanied by a making-of documentary: Blame, Spectre, A Real Friend, A Christmas Tale, The Baby's Room and To Let. The films are in Spanish (something the packaging, curiously, doesn't reveal) with optional English subtitles.
Deal (Unrated): Bret Harrison, currently seen in the TV series Reaper, stars alongside Burt Reynolds and Shannon Elizabeth in this drama about a high-stakes poker game. Various members of the World Poker Tour appear as themselves.
The Life Before Her Eyes (Unrated): This melodrama features Evan Rachel Wood and Uma Thurman as the same woman 15 years apart, as the older version tries to cope with the traumatic events of an earlier time in her life.
George of the Jungle: The Swingin' 1st Season (Unrated): The Cartoon Network's lively new rendition of the 1967 cartoon favorite retains much of the original's good-natured wackiness, but adds some new characters to the mix. The focus still remains on George, a dimwitted but kind-hearted Tarzan type.
Recount (Unrated): This satirical HBO film looks at the 2000 presidential election and the Florida recount, with a cast including Kevin Spacey, Tom Wilkinson, John Hurt, Laura Dern and Denis Leary.
Please Vote For Me (Unrated): If that's not enough politics for you, this 2007 documentary looks at elections held among a group of third-graders in a Chinese primary school, marking the kids' first encounter with democracy in action.
Nixon: Election Year Edition (R): Still want more politics? This extended director's cut of Oliver Stone's 1995 biopic about Richard Nixon adds 28 minutes of footage to the story.
Dexter: The Complete Second Season (Unrated): That lovable psychopath Dexter (Michael C. Hall) is back in a second season of the controversial, critically acclaimed Showtime drama about a serial killer who preys on other serial killers.
House, M.D. Season Four (Unrated): Hugh Laurie returns for another season of Fox's hit medical drama, about a curmudgeonly but brilliant doctor. Some fans found the cast changes in the fourth season off-putting, but the show continued to tell intriguing stories.
Perry Mason: Season 3 Vol. 1 (Unrated): Raymond Burr stars in this classic legal drama. This set has the first 13 episodes from the 1959-1960 season.
Affinity (Unrated): This mystery-romance, originally shown on the gay and lesbian-themed Logo Network, is set in the 19th century and tells the story of the relationship between a socialite and an inmate at a women's prison where she volunteers.
Orangutan Island: Season 1 (Unrated): This Animal Planet series follows a group of apes at a rescue and rehabilitation center in Borneo.
Dana Carvey: Squatting Monkeys Tell No Lies (Unrated): The Saturday Night Live veteran returns to the stage for this stand-up special, which was originally shown on HBO. Extras include a previous Carvey special.
Camp Rock: Extended Rock Star Edition (Unrated): The Jonas Brothers are featured in this Disney Channel movie, the latest in a line of energetic musicals for the tween audience.
Transformers Animated: Season One (Unrated): Here is the first season of the new animated series based on the transforming robots from the recent live action movie, which in turn was based on a 1980s animated series.
