Greetings, Smittyheads,
This edition will be the only one for April. I usually take the month off from Smitty's Notes World to cool my jets for a bit. As you can see, there is a lot of interesting news and events to keep you thinking and keep you busy. I'll pop out the foxhole for a quick e-mail to help get the word out about the RiverRun International Film Festival later in the month.
For the sake of brevity, there will be just a smattering of events below. However, you can always check out what's going on online 24/7 on the SmittysNotes.com Web site or on EventoRama.org throughout the month.
Hope to see you out and about during the month.
Now to the business at hand . . .
The AFAS Group presents - Blues-A-Palooza, Sidewalk Arts Festival and Arts on Sunday Series kick-off - Sunday, April 6
The AFAS Group (Art for Arts Sake) is presenting a free outdoor concert and Sidewalk Arts Festival, which will begin Sunday, April 6th from 12 p.m.-6 p.m. in the Arts District of Downtown Winston Salem.
Blues-a-Palooz is a traditional outdoor blues concert in keeping with the musical history of Trade Street in Winston-Salem. In the 1920s and '30s, Trade Street was a gathering place for old time musicians who played on the sidewalk after their tobacco harvest was sold. This form of music became what is now known as "Piedmont Blues." The lineup of regional musicians that are featured for this free concert on Trade Street (between 6th & 7th streets) includes Ron Hunter and the Have Mercy Band, Twin City Buskers, Aura 3, Tom Rucker, and Possum Jenkins.
In conjunction with this afternoon concert, the Arts On Sunday Series will get off to a start. This sidewalk art festival will feature an incredible roster of visual artists, artists' demonstrations and a kids' craft corner.
The AFAS Group is a non-profit organization whose sole mission is to build, educate and celebrate community through art. For more information visit http://www.theafasgroup.com/.

Baseball Stadium Cam Update. More good news coming.
The future home of the Winston-Salem Warthogs has started to take shape. The outfield retaining walls are nearly complete, creating the "bowl" of the baseball stadium. A lot of the major grading was completed in late winter. You now have a level view of the proposed field while traveling in either directing on Business 40.
The baseball organizers and stadium project team will be making major announcements about the baseball stadium and Warthogs baseball in the next couple of weeks. Should be interesting. To check on the baseball stadium progress visit the TruLook Stadium Cam located at the site. And here's a tip: You can move the cam and also zoom in to any part of the site. All you have to do is create a square with your mouse cursor and BOOM! You are there.

Digital Forsyth – Our community history.
An interesting project is underway that is capturing online the visual history of Forsyth County, N.C. through photographs. It's called Digital Forsyth.
Digital Forsyth is a grant-funded multi-year digitization project by Forsyth County Public Library, Winston-Salem State University's C.G. O'Kelly Library, and Wake Forest University's Z. Smith Reynolds Library and Coy C. Carpenter Medical Library. The grant was awarded by the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services and is administered by the State Library of North Carolina.
This collaborative project through digitization facilitates access to cultural, historical and scientific heritage photograph collections, thereby increasing interest in and knowledge of the past and informing future generations. Many photographs date to the mid- 19th to early 20th centuries. You can see what early downtown and other parts of the city looked like decades ago. The goal is to make Digital Forsyth as the definitive online repository of cultural heritage resources held by Forsyth County institutions. Buried in the archive is a picture of my great-grandfather John Henry Smith. As a native of the city, I'm pretty glad they are doing it. Check it out and learn our history at http://www.digitalforsyth.org
