In the angry debates about health-care reform, it would help to remember that our nation was built on two great themes of the "American dream." One of those themes has always been liberty -- freedom from unwarranted restraint or coercion. This ideal exalts the rugged individual who stands alone, and sees government's role to keep us from infringing one another's liberty.

The article in the Nov. 17 Journal, "Panel's advice stirring debate," informs us that a "government task force" has decided that most women should wait until they are 50 to have a mammogram, and then only every other year.

I write to support the many readers who have lauded Rep. Virginia Foxx for her courageous vote against "Obamacare." If "Obamacare" passes, we will all have health insurance. How un-American. If "Obamacare" passes, people will actually get care for their cancer in time rather than waiting to the last minute for treatment so local folks can hold a bake sale or spaghetti dinner to pay for it. How socialist. If "Obamacare" passes, people can no longer be dropped from their insurance if they have a pre-existing condition. How fascist. If "Obamacare" passes, children will get the health care they need. Sounds communist to me.

http://www2.journalnow.com/content/2009/nov/19/sept-11-terrorists-on-trial/opinion-letters/

As many folks have stated, President Obama's decision to bring the 9/11 terrorists to New York for trial ("9/11 defendant to go on trial in New York," Nov. 14) is like bringing the Japanese who attacked Pearl Harbor to Hawaii for trial in a civilian court. This is the most ludicrous thing Obama has done yet. And for Attorney General Eric Holder to suggest we can find "an impartial jury" in the very city that was attacked is beyond comprehension. In my opinion, only a jury of their peers would be considered "impartial," and if we find someone who is equal to the terrorists in abilities, qualifications and background, shouldn't they, too, be arrested?

This is in response to the Nov. 11 letter "Squandered tax incentives." I am sorry the writer feels a bit cheated about the distribution of the refund from Dell. I would like to point out that when the city or county has a shortfall of funds or they need money for something, they sometimes raise the property taxes on the homeowner. Renters such as he are never affected by this, so why should not the homeowner receive a break for a change?

The letter "Art delay raises questions" (Nov. 9), while lauding the writer's own career as an artist, condemns the Winston-Salem Police Department for the removal of Mark Jenkins' sculptures. The writer admits that he doesn't know all the details, nor if the necessary permission was granted for the sculptures' installation, yet he vilifies the police, who, he says, are already famous for bad decisions over the past decades. Gosh, here I thought they were famous for their recent bravery in the Peters Creek shootings or their personal courage in going to the scene of accidents and other tragedies that most of us would run from. The police do not make the laws; they enforce them, often at great risk to themselves.

Parents of Cook Elementary School students aren't the only folks who feel strong school loyalty ("No Attraction to This Magnet," Nov. 8). Our son has attended Brunson Elementary School, our neighborhood school, since kindergarten and is now in the highly academically gifted program. Having visited other schools in our county, we realize how special Brunson is and how lucky we are. The staff and administration are exceptional and the student population is wonderfully diverse. A school is about so much more than a building.

I would like to thank everyone who came out to vote on Nov. 3. I would also like to thank my supporters, who generously donated their time and financial support in our attempt to unseat a popular incumbent. While we may not have prevailed in the vote count, my campaign stood up for our common commitment to making this city the kind of place where our kids and grandkids can grow and prosper. My hope is that the campaign's themes of conservative financial management and regulatory reform are not lost on the Winston-Salem City Council. These principles are extremely important in these tough economic times and I know that our message resonated with a number of voters.
