They were from the Declaration of Independence: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness." As the years progressed and I studied further, I realized that Thomas Jefferson, who wrote these words, was a slave holder. What did he mean by "all men"? Through the years, I read everything I could find that might illuminate Jefferson's means. Did he mean women also, and did he mean his slaves? <i>All</i> people?]]></description>
