Grants aim at bettering rural health

JEFFERSON - Medical and dental services in Alleghany, Ashe and Surry counties are among 24 grant recipients getting a portion of $3.8 million in the first phase of Rural Hope, a rural health-care initiative designed to create jobs and improve health care through the construction and expansion of rural health-care facilities, Gov. Bev Perdue announced yesterday.
The money comes from the Rural Center ($3,032,500); the Golden LEAF Foundation ($560,000); and the N.C. Health and Wellness Trust Fund ($226,366). The grants range from $32,500 to $480,000.
For every $12,000 of grant money received, at least one job must be created. The grants must be matched by at least an equal amount of private and/or public money.
The recipients include:
□ Ashley Weeks Dentistry in Alleghany County, $36,000 from the Rural Center, for using a vacant building in Sparta to start up a dental practice.
□ Ashe County government, $360,000 from the Rural Center, for Ashe Services for the Aging to build a 55-bed adult-care home with an Alzheimer's and dementia wing.
□ Ashe County government, $36,000 from the Health and Wellness Trust Fund, for Ashe Memorial Hospital for renovations to add Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scanner services.
□ Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Surry County, $84,000 from Golden Leaf, for renovations and new space for an expansion of the emergency department.
