Sheriff Andy Stokes said that someone tipped the district attorney's office that Bobby Lee Mabe Jr., 38, had drugs in his patrol car.
Deputies and SBI agents went to Mabe's home on Jack Booe Road and searched his patrol car finding drugs that had been seized in other investigations.
Mabe, a 3½ year veteran of the department, has been charged with possession of cocaine, marijuana and altering or destroying evidence.
He is being held in the Iredell County Jail with bond set at $50,000.
He has been suspended without pay.
Stokes said that Mabe has been suspended without pay, and that the investigation is continuing to find out how he got the drugs.
