WSSU gets $1.2 million for training health-care workers

WASHINGTON - WASHINGTON — Winston-Salem State University was the biggest recipient of a combined $1.3 million in federal grants toward training health-care professionals.
The university will receive $761,533 for scholarships for disadvantaged students from the U.S. Health and Human Services Department as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, according to the office of U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan, D-N.C.
N.C. Central University will receive $61,969 in grants for disadvantaged students, along with $53,651 for UNC Charlotte and $8,919 for Piedmont Community College.
UNC Chapel Hill will receive $425,055 for public-health traineeships, along with $26,606 to East Carolina University. The traineeships are aimed at dealing with work-force shortages in the medical profession.
