Meridian

411 N. Marshall St.

Phone: 722-8889. $$$$. NS. ABC.

A constantly changing, seasonal menu makes Meridian's hefty prices a little easier to swallow. This restaurant has also jumped on the local-food bandwagon, stocking its kitchen with goat cheese and other products from North Carolina.

Old Salem Tavern

736 S. Main St. (in Old Salem).

Phone: 748-8585. $$$. ABC. S/NS.

The Moravians of the early 1800s ate more than sugar cake and the world's thinnest cookies … take pumpkin and sunflower seed crusted salmon, for example, served by wait staff in period costume. Don't miss the homemade lemon ice cream.

Full Moon Oyster Bar and Seafood Kitchen

1473 River Ridge Drive, Clemmons.

Phone: 712-8200. $$$. BW. NS.

Oysters on the half shell, steamed shrimp, Alaskan king crab, snow crab, scallops and clams, by the dozen, peck and pound.

Meta's Restaurant

102 W. Third St.

Phone: 750-0811. $. NS.

Southern-comfort self-serve cafeteria (but not a chain). Grab your tray, get in line and choose from beef ribs, fried chicken, baked salmon, meatloaf, mac and cheese, cobbler, and collard, turnip and mustard greens.

El Paisano

2742 Waughtown St.

Phone: 650-0400. $. NS.

Tacos, tacos, tacos, drizzled with lots of fresh salsas. And at this taqueria, you can see women behind the counter making the corn tortillas that are shortly destined for your mouth.

Ombu

615 St. George Square (off of Hanes Mall Boulevard).

Phone: 293-4346. $$$. NS. ABC.

"Wood Fired Fusion" is Ombu's tagline, but that seems to invite rambling all over the globe. And indeed, the menu is ambitious, as is everything in this stunning restaurant.

Thai Sawatdee

2281 Cloverdale Ave. (inside Harris Teeter).

Phone: 725-1332. $-$$. NS.

Pick up some panang curry and ground-chicken lettuce wraps with your groceries. This tiny Thai restaurant is short on atmosphere, but long on taste. Very good tom kha. Avoid the pad Thai, though.

Noma

321 W. Fourth St.

Phone: 703-5112. $$-$$$. ABC. NS.

Tasty entrees, but the bar food lets me down a little -- and this is a bar, albeit a sleek, coiffed one. Winners are the flank steak with red-wine Vidalia-onion jus, chicken with a Dijon and Texas Pete sauce, and pork tenderloin.
