SALEM, Va.
Mike Jones hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift Salem past Winston-Salem 6-4 and a 3-0 sweep of the Southern Division Championship series last night.
Salem had defeated Winston-Salem in the first two playoff games at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
Salem will play either Wilmington or Lynchburg for the Carolina League championship.
The Dash, which won the first-half title and finished tied for first place in the second half, finished the season 73-67.
Seth Loman gave Winston-Salem a 1-0 lead to start the second inning when he homered off Seth Garrison. It was the 24th home run of the season for Loman, who hit 15 with Winston-Salem and eight with low Class A Kannapolis to begin the year.
The Red Sox took advantage of a miscue to tie the score in the bottom of the third inning. Jon Hee and Anthony Rizzo connected on back-to-back singles with one out against Jacob Rasner. With a full-count on Brad Correll, the runners attempted a double steal as Correll struck out swinging. With nobody covering the base at third, the throw by catcher Adam Ricks sailed into left field and allowed Hee to score.
Garrison was solid in his six innings of work as he held the Dash to a run on five hits with five strikeouts, but did not figure in the decision. Once he left the game after the sixth inning, the Dash took advantage of the Red Sox bullpen.
Jason Rice walked Logan Johnson and Adam Ricks to start the inning and Tyler Kuhn advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Rice was called for a balk, allowing Johnson to score to put the Dash in front. Dale Mollenhauer and Greg Paiml followed with run-scoring hits to give the Dash a 4-1 lead.
Salem bounced back in the bottom of the seventh inning after Rasner left the game.
Ryan Dent lined an RBI double off Nate Jones and Che-Hsuan Lin collected an RBI groundout to bring the Red Sox within a run. Hee, who had three hits, lined a two-out run-scoring single into center field that tied the score at four.
Coming off one of his worst start of the year, Rasner pitched 61/3 strong innings and held Salem to two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. He left with a 4-1 lead.
Hector Santiago allowed the game-ending homer and took the loss.
