A Winston-Salem police officer shot at a man who was avoiding arrest yesterday on a charge of armed robbery, police said. The man was not injured.
Police say that Richard Bolen, 30, armed with a handgun, carjacked a woman about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Wal-Mart store on Hanes Mill Road. The woman got away.
Police say that Bolen abandoned the car from the carjacking and then stole a 2002 Buick Century from a house on Oak Summit Road.
As authorities were trying to arrest him about 4 p.m. yesterday, Bolen, who was driving a stolen car, hit two cars, police said.
Officer Brian Kurutz shot at Bolen twice, hitting the car Bolen was driving. One of the bullets ricocheted and hit a house on Canaan Place Drive, police said. No one was injured.
Bolen was taken into custody after crashing in the front yard of a house on Lansing Drive, police said.
Kurutz was placed on administrative duty, which is routine when an officer fires his gun, and the police will conduct an investigation into the shooting.
Other charges are pending against Bolen, whose most recent address was 8100 Dull Road in Clemmons, police said. He was being held in the Forsyth County Jail last night, with bond set at $157,500.

Herbert Ranger Gilbert, 19, of 1285 Centenary Church Road was charged with manufacturing marijuana, maintaining a dwelling for manufacturing a controlled substance, felony possession of marijuana, possession of a firearm with altered serial number, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was in the Davidson County Jail, with bond set at $35,000.
