MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.

Pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka of the Boston Red Sox will start for the Salem Red Sox in a first-round Carolina League playoff game against the Winston-Salem Dash on Wednesday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park.

Manager Chad Epperson of the Salem Red Sox told The Roanoke Times that Matsuzaka will be making a rehab start against the Dash. A spokesman for the Dash also confirmed Matsuzaka's upcoming appearance in Winston-Salem.

Matsuzaka has been on the disabled list with a shoulder injury and has not pitched for Boston since June 19. He pitched 42/3 innings in a rehab start against Class AAA Pawtucket in his last start, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk.

Before he went on the disabled list, Matsuzaka had a 1-5 record with an 8.23 ERA in eight starts. He was 18-3 last season with a 2.90 ERA.

Lefty Justin Edwards of the Dash will oppose Matsuzaka in Game 1.

The Dash will come into the playoffs on the heels of a 7-2 victory against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans last night. Brent Morel led the Dash with three hits, including a three-run homer in the seventh inning.

The Dash took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Dale Mollenhauer singled, advanced to second on an error and scored on an RBI groundout by Salvador Sanchez.

The Pelicans tied the game in the bottom of the first on a home run by Donell Linares., then took a 2-1 lead in the third when Michael Fisher doubled and scored on a single by Linares.

The Dash answered with two runs in the top of the fourth on Tyler Kuhn's run-scoring groundout and Joe Persichina's RBI single for a 3-2 lead. The Dash scored another run in the sixth when Justin Green led off with a single, stole second and scored on a double by John Curtis.

Four relievers for the Dash combined to work five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out seven.

Charlis Burdie (4-1) pitched two scoreless innings, getting out of a bases-loaded, no out jam in the sixth inning. Jay Chapman (1-2) allowed two runs on four hits in 22/3 innings for the Pelicans.

The Winston-Salem/Salem playoff series is a best-of-five series with Game 2 scheduled for Thursday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park.
