■ Beech Mountain Resort will hold a combined mountain bike/mountain board competition today and Sunday that makes up the final leg of the Triple Crown Downhill Bike Competition and the inaugural High Ground Mountain Board Competition. The mountain board contest has a $1,000 purse.
The entry fee for mountain bikers is $55, with helmets mandatory for all racers.
"The Triple Crown series has been successful. We're averaging about 100 competitors per event and expect to have that many or more for the finale," said Ryan Costin, the director of operations at Beech Mountain Resort.
For more information, call Talia Freeman at 828-387-2011 (ext. 204) or www.skibeech.com.
■ The field for the 5th Angels Triathlon at Tanglewood on Sept. 20 is full at 500 entrants, but race officials still need volunteers. More information is available through e-mail at race@angelsrace.com.
The idea of the race, which has had a full field each year, is to honor those who have inspired. Participants write the name of someone who inspires them during body-marking before the race, with the idea of carrying that spirit throughout the race.
