■ Dwight Jones, a sophomore receiver at North Carolina, will have arthroscopic surgery on his right knee today at UNC Hospitals and will miss Saturday's season opener against The Citadel. He started feeling knee pain earlier in the week, North Carolina officials said in a release, and didn't practice Wednesday. A determination of his recovery time will be made after surgery.
Freshman Joshua Adams, who had been No. 2 at the position, will move into the lineup to replace Jones, who played in three games last season but didn't have a reception.
■ UCLA will go ahead with its season opener against San Diego State at the Rose Bowl on Saturday despite the wildfire in the nearby San Gabriel Mountains. Athletics Director Dan Guerrero said yesterday that the decision to play was made after consulting with Pasadena officials and discussing air-quality conditions.
The Rose Bowl is less than 10 miles south of the fires burning in the Angeles National Forest.
■ Tight end Jermaine Gresham of No. 3 Oklahoma will miss Saturday's opener against No. 20 Brigham Young because of cartilage damage in his right knee. Coach Bob Stoops said yesterday that Gresham and team officials were considering treatment options "that could have a bearing on his return" but didn't elaborate.
Gresham played a big role in Oklahoma's record-setting offense last season with 66 catches for 950 yards and 14 touchdowns.
■ The Motor City Bowl has been rechristened the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl, with the Detroit-based pizza chain stepping up to take over sponsorship after traditional backers Chrysler and General Motors dropped out in cutbacks of sponsorships. Ford Motor Co., remains a sponsor, but details still are being worked out. This year's game will be Dec. 26 at Ford Field.
■ John Glenn, an Ohio native and the first American to orbit the Earth, and his wife, Annie, will dot the "i" Saturday when Ohio State plays Navy. The Glenns will get the honor at halftime during the Ohio State alumni band's script Ohio formation. Only a handful of non-band members have dotted the "i," including comedian Bob Hope and legendary Buckeyes coach Woody Hayes.
■ Linebacker Luthur Brown of Southern California has regained his academic eligibility, has been fully reinstated and will be available to play Saturday against San Jose State. Coach Pete Carroll said yesterday on the school's Web site that Brown was scheduled to practice yesterday for the first time after sitting out all of preseason camp.
■ Gerald Williams, a starting defensive end for Tennessee, may not play in the Volunteers' season opener against Western Kentucky because of an injured foot.
Williams didn't practice yesterday, but Coach Lane Kiffin said he still anticipates Williams, a junior, playing some on Saturday against Western Kentucky.
Williams has been one of the team's fall camp success stories. After switching from linebacker to defensive end at the end of spring practice, Williams overtook junior Ben Martin on the depth chart and hasn't relinquished the spot.
