North Forsyth played Northeast Guilford last night for the Mid-Piedmont 3-A title. The Vikings could have tied for the title.
Instead, Rayshawn Trader scored three touchdowns and the Rams ran away with the game 29-12 and the conference crown.
Northeast didn't complete a pass but ran for 334 yards on 55 carries, including Trader's 144 yards.
"A team like that is going to control the ball and the clock, and we needed to convert short-yardage situations when we had the ball," Coach Pete Gilchrist of the Vikings said. "We didn't do it."
Still, Gilchrist said the Vikings did a good job holding a good team to 29 points.
"I love the kids I've got," he said. "They would not quit. Since I've been here, there's been a big improvement. They don't drop their heads when they get behind. You do that, and you'll win some games."
Gilchrist was already thinking of next Friday's game at Southwestern Randolph. If the Vikings win, they'll have three conference victories, five overall and will be assured a playoff berth.
North ran for 47 yards on 20 carries, led by Cornelius Davis' 10 carries for 30 yards and a touchdown. Krishawn Coleman was 22 of 37 passing for 230 yards and one touchdown, with one interception. Kyle Onuma caught seven passes for 82 yards; Marvin Young had seven catches for 45 yards and a touchdown, and Joseph Malachi had three catches for 56 yards.
The Rams ate up half of the first quarter with a 10-play, 82-yard drive. The big plays were 13-yard runs by Trey Ingram and Michael Sanders. Trader capped the five-minute, five-second drive with a 37-yard touchdown run at the 5:48 mark of the first quarter.
After a North punt, Northeast ran off 11 plays for 60 yards. The Rams had runs of 12 and 13 yards by Sanders, and a 7-yard touchdown run by Trader that made the score 14-0.
The Vikings moved 74 yards in nine plays to get back in the game. The big plays were a 17-yard flat pass from Coleman to Rakis Bailey and a double-reverse fleaflicker from Coleman to Malachi that carried 34 yards to the Rams' 25. North moved to the 14, and Davis, the backup quarterback, sprinted for the touchdown. The kick was blocked, making the score 14-6 with 9:46 left in the half.
On the second drive of the second half, the Rams took over at their 28 after a punt and moved 72 yards in nine plays. Ingram ran 9 yards for the touchdown, and Sanders ran for the two points after picking up a botched extra-point snap.
After a long return on the ensuing kickoff, the Vikings took over at the Northeast 43.
Eleven plays later, Coleman passed to Young on a quick screen for the 4-yard score. The pass for two failed, leaving Northeast's lead at 22-12.
The Rams put the game away with a four-play, 53-yard drive that took 1:41. Trader raced 40 yards, breaking tackles and keeping his balance while scoring the touchdown. Matt Johnson's extra-point kick made it 29-12 with 8:10 to play.
Last night was senior night. And at halftime members of the 1971 North Forsyth football team, which beat High Point Central 10-7 for the state 4-A title, were inducted into the school's athletics hall of fame.
