NFL Notebook: Redskins could get Cooley back in a month

Published: October 29, 2009

Redskins: Washington said tight end Chris Cooley could return to action in a month after having an operation on his broken right ankle.

Cooley's surgery was yesterday, two days after he was injured in the first half of Washington's 27-17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Redskins originally feared that Cooley, a two-time Pro Bowl player, could be sidelined for two months and might have to go on injured reserve, missing the rest of the season.

After yesterday's operation, though, he is expected to miss four weeks, barring any setbacks.

Cooley, who has never missed a game since the Redskins drafted him in the third round in 2004, has 29 catches for 332 yards and two touchdowns this season.

Packers: Brett Favre is downplaying any anxiety about returning to Lambeau Field, but he expects to hear boos and cheers when his Minnesota Vikings play the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

Favre said yesterday that he hasn't thought much about emotions he might feel returning to Green Bay, except when others bring up the subject. After 16 seasons as a Packers star, Favre will play there for the first time as a visitor.

Favre said he doesn't believe he'll be as nervous as he was in the hours before Minnesota's first game against Green Bay three weeks ago. Regarding potential disrespect from Packers fans, Favre said he recognizes their devotion but expects the "true fans" to maintain their appreciation.

Seahawks: Walter Jones, a nine-time Pro Bowl tackle, has gone on Seattle's injured-reserve list, possibly ending his illustrious career. Coach Jim Mora said yesterday that Jones, 35, still has pain that is "not bearable" in his surgically repaired left knee.

Jones, the anchor to Seattle's offensive line for the past 10 years, has had two knee surgeries since he last played, last Thanksgiving. Mora is not ruling out a third surgery but said he has no idea whether Jones can or will want to return in 2010.

Lions: Quarterback Matthew Stafford took another step toward returning to action, going through parts of practice without limitations for the second straight day. Stafford, the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, has missed two games with an injured right knee. Detroit had a bye Sunday and will play the St. Louis Rams on Sunday.

Jets: The New York Jets are making season tickets for their new Meadowlands stadium available to the general public starting Sunday and cutting prices on some seats by as much as 50 percent. The team announced that it would reduce the prices in the four sections of the Mezzanine Club, which makes up approximately 7,000 of the 80,000 seats.

Buccaneers: Winless Tampa Bay has changed starting quarterbacks again, and rookie Josh Freeman will take over. Freeman, the 17th pick in this year's draft, made his NFL debut Sunday, playing two series in the fourth quarter of a 35-7 loss to the New England Patriots in London.

Coach Raheem Morris was noncommital about his quarterback plans after that game and officially made the change yesterday at practice. The Bucs (0-7) have an open date this weekend, giving Freeman extra time to prepare for his first start Nov. 8, at home against Green Bay.

Jets: Wide receiver Braylon Edwards refused to provide details about the misdemeanor assault charge he faces over accusations he punched a man outside a Cleveland nightclub.

In his first media availability since the charge was filed on Monday, he said yesterday that it's "still a legal matter," and "we'll see what happens with that."

The charge carries a maximum sentence of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. An arraignment was scheduled for Nov. 17 in Cleveland Municipal Court. Edwards' attorney says his client will plead not guilty.

Edwards is accused of punching promoter Edward Givens, a friend of NBA star LeBron James, after an argument Oct. 5. Two days later, the Browns traded Edwards to the Jets.
