La Botana

1547 Hanes Mall Blvd. (Kester Mill Village).

Phone: 768-6588. $$. ABC. S/NS.

The usual faijitas and such, but also more authentic Mexican fare off the regular menu, such as chicken and enchiladas in deep, dark red mole; chunky guacamole "regional"; tacos filled with chopped steak, bacon and green onions. Lots of choices for vegetarians.

Oriental Cafe

612 Hanes Mall Blvd. (Pavilions Shopping Center)

Phone: 774-9098. $$. ABC. Smoking only in bar.

Can it be that a strip mall restaurant can really do Thai, Chinese and Japanese? So far, yes, and well. Terrific sushi and Mai Tais, those cheesy Polynesian cocktails served in green ceramic glasses shaped like bamboo.

Mellow Mushroom

314 W. Fourth St.

Phone: 245-2820. $. ABC.

The calzones are so-so, but the parmesan-dusted pies are a treat. Tons of toppings, from tempeh to feta, plus 30-plus beers on tap to wash it down.

Boba House

332 Tate St., Greensboro.

Phone: 336-379-7444. $-$$. BW.

If you're a vegetarian or vegan, this is heaven. If you're not, but you favor Asian soups, noodles, curries and stir fry, this cozy, completely meat-free restaurant is worth trying. Go for the Hula Pot, a spicy curry dish studded with tofu, vegetables or faux duck; the udon noodles; or make a meal of "Shredded Heaven," a chopped cabbage, carrot and onion salad.

River Birch Lodge

3324 Robinhood Road.

Phone: 768-1111. $$$. ABC. NS.

>Mountain lodge cuisine comes to suburbia. Venison, cedar-planked salmon, trout ... and brie and huckleberry jam baked in phyllo dough. Also serves Sunday brunch.

Sakura Japanese Steak and Seafood

548 S. Stratford Road.

Phone: 777-8744. $$, BW, S/NS.

Home of the volcano roll (a spicy tuna roll flambeed with Everclear) and cheesecake tempura and bento boxes. Among the offerings are udon and soba noodles and a long maki, nigiri and sashimi menu. If you like tuna, try the lightly seared tataki.

Athena Greek Tavern

680 S. Stratford Road.

Phone: 794-3069. $$. ABC. NS.

Think Greek food is all moussaka and spanakopita, souvlaki and tzatziki? Try keftedes (meatballs), sKordalia (potato dip), pastitsio (macaroni and cheese), galaktoboureko (milky custard pastry) and melitzanosalata (eggplant puree). Opa!

West End Cafe

926 W. Fourth St.

Phone: 723-4774. $$. ABC. S/NS.

Lunch is king at this neighborhood café, and you can get the same salads, sandwiches and burgers at dinner, but consider the more adventuresome dinner specials, such as shrimp ceviche tostadas, cedar-roasted ostrich and sautéed trout over a blue crab corn cake.
