NFL Notebook: Ware agrees to extension

Cowboys: Linebacker DeMarcus Ware has agreed on a contract extension, a six-year deal through the 2015 season.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says he shook hands with Ware before the Cowboys' 37-21 victory against Atlanta, agreeing to the deal. The paperwork was finalized late yesterday and the extension announced.

Ware, who was in the final season of the contract he signed after being the 11th overall pick in the 2005 draft, has 571/2 sacks in his 70 regular-season games.

There was no immediate confirmation from the team about financial terms, though a report on the Cowboys' Web site said Ware's deal was for $78 million, an average of $16 million with $40 million guaranteed.

Browns: Coach Eric Mangini of Cleveland has no plans to bench Derek Anderson, the NFL's lowest-rated quarterback. Anderson has completed just 23 of 70 passes in the past three games, and he came out of Sunday's 31-3 loss to Green Bay with an overall 40.6 rating.

Despite the stats, Mangini feels Anderson gives his team the best chance to win and will not switch back to Brady Quinn, who entered the season as the starter but was replaced by Anderson after 10 quarters.

Broncos: Denver made its first in-season roster move of the year yesterday, bringing in punter Mitch Berger and waiving Brett Kern. Berger is a 16-year veteran and two-time Pro Bowler who played for Pittsburgh last season.

Kern was averaging 46.1 yards, but he ranked near the bottom of the league in net average (34.5).

Jets: Authorities said that wide receiver Braylon Edwards has been charged with misdemeanor assault over accusations he punched a man outside a Cleveland nightclub. Cleveland city prosecutor Victor Perez filed the charge yesterday. It carries a maximum sentence of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

An arraignment was scheduled for Nov. 17 in Cleveland Municipal Court.

Patrick D'Angelo, an attorney for Edwards, said his client will plead not guilty.

Edwards is accused of punching promoter Edward Givens, a friend of NBA star LeBron James, after an argument Oct. 5. Two days later, the Browns traded Edwards to the Jets.

Vikings: A day after losing to the Steelers, Brett Favre lost a pass completion, too.

An official scoring change made yesterday took away one of Favre's completions during Minnesota's 27-17 loss to the Steelers on Sunday. Favre officially completed 33 of 50 passes, not 34 of 51. Favre was errantly given a completion for no yards to Sidney Rice with 8:16 remaining on an apparent 10-yard touchdown pass play that was nullified by a 10-yard tripping penalty on tight end Jeff Dugan. Rice ended with 10 catches for 136 yards, not 11 catches.
