Easley's ex-lawyer blocks subpoena to testify

RALEIGH - The legal counsel of then-Gov. Mike Easley while in office has blocked his own testimony for now before the State Board of Elections, citing attorney-client privilege.
Ruffin Poole filed a petition Monday in Wake County Superior Court seeking to quash the subpoena sent to him by the elections board currently investigating Easley's finances. Poole was expected to testify Monday afternoon before the board.
Poole's lawyer didn't return messages seeking comment but board chairman Larry Leake said in public that a Superior Court judge blocked enforcement of the subpoena. The board asked for the state Court of Appeals to take up the case as soon as possible.
Leake said he doesn't believe the testimony they are seeking would violate Poole's privilege with Easley.
