Correspondent of the week: We the people

Published: October 25, 2009

We the people hear many things from the left and the right, and once in a blue moon from the center, even as those who are in the center get pooh-poohed and looked upon with disdain. We have been told that there will be a discussion about health-care reform.

Funny thing though, no one in Washington seems to be listening to anyone here. Yet there are several of the members of the committees who are writing the proposed legislation meeting now behind closed doors. Why? We the people were told by our elected officials that our needs would be met by what is being passed off as comprehensive health-care reform. Instead of trying to reform health care that will cost almost $900 billion over 10 years, how about they fix Medicare first? How? By allowing Medicare to negotiate for lower drug and medical appliance costs, as do the VA and other government agencies.

Have the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service actively investigate and have the Justice Department go after the people who are committing and causing fraud that runs rampant with the same speed and tenacity as they went after Martha Stewart and Bernie Madoff. Why can't we the people have the right to expect that?

I thought those in both houses of Congress were working for us -- we the people. Guess not, huh?
