DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.

Cedric Hickman's 12-yard touchdown run with 9:15 left gave Winston-Salem State its first lead, and the Rams held on for a 16-10 win against Bethune-Cookman for its first victory of the season yesterday.

Hickman's touchdown gave the Rams a 13-10 advantage.

"We are just happy to have the win. We played a heck of a ballgame. Our young men really stepped up this afternoon and I am just so proud of the play of all of our guys" Coach Kermit Blount of WSSU said.

"Our offense played well and really played WSSU football and our defense not only gave us the chance to win, but preserved the win at the end. This one really was a special team effort from our guys tonight."

The Rams (1-6) increased their lead to 16-10 on Landen Thayer's 36-yard field goal with 5:29 remaining.

Bethune-Cookman (2-5) had an opportunity to tie the score, but the Rams stopped Androse Bell at the 1-yard line on a fourth-down play from the 3-yard line with 19 seconds remaining in the game.

The Wildcats took a 7-0 lead when Bell scored on a 1-yard run with 3:29 left in the second quarter.

WSSU answered with its first touchdown after Kevin Dorsey recovered a Bethune-Cookman fumble at the 12-yard line. Two plays later quarterback Jarrett Dunston hit Dominique Fitzgerald with a 12-yard touchdown pass, cutting the lead to 7-6. Thayer missed the extra-point try.

Bethune-Cookman opened the second half with its final points of the day. Kory Kowalski kicked a 31-yard field goal, capping an 11-play, 57-yard drive for a 10-6 lead.

Hickman had 97 yards on nine carries. Bell led the Wildcats with 71 yards on 23 carries.

Bethune-Cookman, which controlled the ball for more than 39 minutes, was 9 of 18 on third-down chances. The Rams failed to convert any third-down opportunities.

WSSU is back home on Saturday against Hampton in a 2 p.m. kickoff at Bowman-Gray Stadium.
