Community Arts Cafe’s ‘Gallery of the Arts’ now open
Just opened in the (dot) Commerce Plaza at 411 W. Fourth St. in downtown Winston-Salem is a new gallery exclusively featuring artists from around the Triad. Community Arts Cafe’s ‘Gallery of the Arts’ opened last week. The co-owners are Jim Tedder and Paul Pento.
The Gallery of the Arts is the first phase of a multi-faceted arts development facility whose conception began almost four years ago. The Community Arts Cafe, which started as a magazine highlighting artistic talent across the Triad, saw the need for a creative entity that not only showcased artists, but also provided a portfolio of services to develop and distribute their work.
Following the Gallery of the Arts opening, the Community Arts Cafe will continue to expand the facility with additional phases, including the Arts Alley Bistro and the Cafe Theatre.
The Arts Alley Bistro, scheduled for opening in early 2010, will be an independent bookstore in a cafe setting featuring artists’ exhibits and live performances. It will also serve area coffees, teas, N.C. wines and cheeses, plus a simple, yet unique Tapas menu.
The Cafe Theatre, slated for opening in late 2010, will be a flexible, mid-sized venue accommodating 200 to 300 patrons either at tables or in assembly seating. The theatre will showcase new music, CD releases, staged readings, performances of new theatrical works and emerging artists’ performances in dance, comedy and spoken word.

Shoe Shrine (A tribute to Kelly Jo Petersen-Womble/fundraiser for The Kelly Jo Petersen Scholarship at UNCSA School of Design and Production.
Urban Artware and 5IVE & 40RTY in Winston-Salem’s Downtown Arts District will present Shoe Shrine an exhibition of specially created shoes in memory of artist, art advocate and friend, Kelly Petersen. In honor and in memory of Kelly, whose one of many passions was shoes, the community is invited to submit shoe shrines to be displayed in an exhibition at 5IVE & 40RTY October 29 through November 13 and to be auctioned on Friday November 13th with proceeds to benefit the Kelly Jo Petersen Scholarship at UNCSA School of Design and Production.
This idea of this project actually came from Kelly herself. Upon learning of the progression/reoccurrance of cancer, Kelly sent an email to friends asking that they not send sappy cards or get well flowers but rather cool, crazy, funky shoes. Boy-howdy...girlfriend got some righteous shoes!
SO, Build a Shoe Shrine to honor Kelly Jo and raise money for her scholarship. Build your shrine to Kelly, to a loved one, to Elvis or your favorite dog, cat, friend or whatever you feel passionately about.
Your mission (if you choose to accept it) is to create a shoe shrine. All you need is an old shoe, paint, glitter, hot glue or whatever it is you need to do what you want to do! Any other questions, please feel free to contact Millicent, 722-2345. or urbanartware@bellsouth.net
A Opening Reception, Thursday, October 29 5:40-7:40pm. at 5IVE & 40RTY located at 541 Trade Street. Come out and show your support! Kelly Jo Peterson-Womble influence is still missed in the arts community.
