The sheriff's deputies involved in the fatal shooting of man in Clemmons last February used appropriate force, Forsyth County District Attorney Tom Keith ruled today.

Jovon Antwan Evans was shot to death during a confrontation with five deputies at the Champ Mart on Lewisville-Clemmons.

The State Bureau of Investigation investigated the shooting and Keith based his ruling on the findings of that investigation. The ruling means that the deputies involved will not face any criminal charges.

The deputies stopped Evans, 27, on Feb. 29 for having an expired 30-day license tag.

During the stop, the sheriff's office has said, Evans attempted to drive away, hitting one deputy with his car.

Three deputies — Cpl. Ray Goff, Sgt. Greg Walters and deputy Eric Osborne — then fired their weapons.

An autopsy showed that Evans was shot once in the back.

The bullet went through Jovon Evans' chest wall and into his left lung, from which it was recovered during the autopsy. The autopsy said that the bullet's path was left to right and slightly upward.

The details of the autopsy raised questions among many in the community, including Evans' widow Keyanna Evans and members of the Ministers Conference of Winston-Salem and Vicinity.
