CHARLOTTE - BB&T Corp. and Surrey Bancorp were named yesterday as the top small-business lenders in North Carolina for 2009 by the North Carolina district office of the U.S. Small Business Administration.
BB&T wrote 169 SBA loans worth $40.9 million between Oct. 1, 2008, and Sept. 30, 2009, in being named as N.C. Lender of the Year. The next closest bank was SunTrust Banks Inc. with 26 SBA loans.
Surrey, based in Mount Airy, wrote 47 SBA loans worth $7.1 million in the same time period in being named as N.C. Community Lender of the Year for the fifth consecutive year.
That category involves community banks with less than $1 billion in assets.
The banks will be honored tonight at the N.C. Bankers Association Management Team conference at the Greensboro-High Point Airport Marriott.
