IN OTHER AREAS
□ Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC has received $20,000 from the Food Lion Charitable Foundation. The food bank will use the gift to support its childhood hunger programs, Kids Cafes and the BackPack Program.
The Kids Cafes program addresses the growing problem of childhood hunger in urban communities by providing youth with an evening meal, tutoring and enrichment activities three nights a week throughout the year. The BackPack Program aims to address childhood hunger in rural communities by providing elementary-school children with backpacks full of nutritious, child-friendly foods to take home over the weekends during the school year.
Second Harvest Food Bank provides grants to operate the programs and collaborates with its partner agencies, faith communities, schools and other community groups to manage day-to-day operations of the programs.
□ Griffith Academy has been selected by NC Beautiful to receive a special beautification prize of 50 azaleas for use in the group's 2009 beautification project. The award is part of NC Beautiful's 24th Azalea Celebration, which recognizes North Carolina community groups for improving their communities through creative landscape. The school's project goals are to beautify its campus landscape and provide a community service project for its orientation students.
□ The Lewisville Historical Society has received a $10,000 grant from the Marion Stedman Covington Foundation in Greensboro. The grant will be used for the restoration of the George Elias Nissen House, which will become a cultural and educational center in Lewisville.
□ Jocelyn Ganzert was crowned National American Miss North Carolina Preteen Cover Girl at that state pageant held in July, and has been selected to attend the 2009 National American Miss Pageant in November, where she will compete for a share of cash and prizes.
Her other activities include Irish dancing, and volunteer work for the ALS Association and Reynolda Gardens. She is a student at First Assembly Christian School, and the daughter of Bart and Robin Ganzert of Clemmons.
The National American Miss Pageant is a program which recognizes personal character as well as physical deportment, with special emphasis on an individual's self-confidence, achievement of personal goals, and learning good attitudes about competition.
IN EDUCATION
□ Five area students have been awarded $1,000 Leadership Scholarships by Chick-fil-A:
Andrew Southard, Summerfield, an engineering major at N.C. State University; Jesse Siler, Greensboro, a computer information technology major at Guilford Technical Community College; Kesley Weaver, Greensboro, a nursing major at UNC Greensboro; Justin White, Greensboro, an accounting/finance major at UNC Greensboro; and Joseph Hopkins, Lewisville, a business administration major at Forsyth Technical Community College.
□ Ken Chalk of Winston-Salem, retired chief credit officer of BB&T Corp., has joined the East Carolina University Board of Trustees. He was appointed by Gov. Beverly Perdue to a four year term on the board. He is past chairman of the ECU Foundation and co-chairman of the BB&T Center for Leadership Development at the university. He is the former national chairman of the Risk Management Association, and is currently serving as interim president and CEO of that group.
Chalk received his bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration from ECU.
□ Sarah Caroline Moore, a Dartmouth College student in the class of 2011, is studying English in Dublin, Ireland, this fall as part of the school's foreign study program. She is the daughter of James H. and Julia Moore of Winston-Salem.

□ Sara Shouse was awarded a Juris Doctor degree by New York Law School at its 117th annual commencement ceremonies at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall. The New York Law School is one of the oldest, independent law schools in the United States.
Shouse is the daughter of William and Patricia Shouse of Lewisville.
□ Michael Adams of Winston-Salem has received a Bachelor of Arts in international relations from Tufts University. He was also named to the 2009 spring semester dean's list at Tufts.
□ Gil Giese, viticulture instructor at Surry Community College, was recently awarded best student paper in viticulture at the American Society for Enology and Viticulture Eastern Section meeting held in Ohio. This was the 34th Annual Conference, and this year's focus was vines and wines in a changing climate. Giese's presentation was Root Pruning and Ground Cover to Optimize Vine Vigor and Berry Composition in Cabernet Sauvignon Grapevines.
Giese is currently pursuing a doctorate at Virginia Tech.
□ Sierra Wilson, a rising sophomore at Ashe County High School, recently completed the 12th session of the FBI National Academy Associates Youth Leadership Program. The program is sponsored by the FBINAA Inc., the professional association of graduates of the FBI National Academy for state and local law enforcement officials, a non-government association. She was nominated for the program by Bill Post, Boone Chief of Police.
Sierra is the daughter of Carmen and Jim Wilson of Fleetwood.

□ Sumera Syed of High Point has been awarded a 2009 scholarship by the Avon Foundation for Women. Syed is an independent Avon sales representative, and one of 83 Avon sales representatives to receive the annual financial scholarship this year. The scholarship can be applied to enrollment in an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational school.
IN THE ARTS
□ Matthew Liner, band director at Ronald Reagan High School, was recently elected to membership in the American School Band Director's Association. Members are selected for their teaching experience and success of their music programs, and on the recommendation of other ASBDA members.
The ASBDA is a national organization consisting of experienced directors and teachers of school bands whose purpose is to advance and improve the music education of students studying band instruments.
□ Sarah Steen spent the summer singing with the North Carolina Baptist All-State Youth Choir, a 70-voice chorus sponsored by the Baptist State Convention. During her three years with the group, the choir has performed at
Duke University, the Women's Prison in Raleigh, Ghost Town in the Sky in Maggie Valley, and at churches throughout the state.
Sarah is a rising senior at Mount Tabor High School, and the daughter of Kathy and Warren Steen of Winston-Salem.
IN CIVIC AFFAIRS
□ The following area students recently served as pages in the N.C. Senate:
Latosha Denise Bell, a student at Robert Brodnax Glenn High School, was sponsored by Sen. Linda Garrou. She is the daughter of Herbert and Jethea Bell of Kernersville.

IN PUBLIC SERVICE
□ Rita Woodruff has been elected the new director of the Alleghany Educational Foundation, Inc. She succeeds her husband, the late John Woodruff, the founding director of the charitable foundation.
The Alleghany Educational Foundation Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping local students pursue a post-secondary education. Over $300,000 in scholarship aid has been distributed to high-school seniors pursuing a college degree.
IN THE MILITARY
□ Pvt. Joseph Martin Powell has graduated from basic military training with the United States Marine Corp at Parris Island, S.C., He is the son of Marty Powell of Mocksville and Janet Powell of Winston-Salem, and a 2008 graduate of Davie High School.
He will be stationed at Camp LeJune in Jacksonville.
□ Air Force Airman Michael Burl has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, and has earned credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
He is a 2007 graduate of Carver High School, and the son of Lisa Burl of Winston Salem.
IN SCOUTING
□ Hailey E. Hawks, a member of Girl Scout Troop 824, has earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award, the highest award in Junior Girl Scouting. For her project, she held a towel and sheet drive for animal use at the Surry County Animal Shelter.
Hailey is a student at Pilot Middle School, and has been a Girl Scout for five years. She is the daughter of Ronnie and Claire Hawks of Pinnacle.
In 4-H
□ Michael Drake was elected state 4-H vice-president during the annual state 4-H Congress in Raleigh. He was one of four state 4-H officers elected during congress. State 4-H officers serve as the voice of the young people involved in the 4-H program. They also design a state project that is carried out by 4-H clubs across the state and plan next year's 4-H Congress.
The 4-H Congress is the high point of the 4-H year, bringing young people from across the state to the N.C. State University campus for a week of activity. This year's Congress included a celebration of 100 years of 4-H in North Carolina.
Michael is the son of Sylvia and Gary Drake of Lexington.
