The Martha Graham Dance Company will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday in Farthing Auditorium at Appalachian State University, as part of the university's Performing Arts Series in Boone.
The Graham Company is celebrating its 80th-anniversary season by touring "Prelude and Revolt: Early Masterpieces of American Dance," which chronicles Graham's emergence as a singular artist.
The program will feature repertoire that showcases "the scope and beauty of Graham's work, from the power and simplicity of the all-woman group works and early solos to the acclaimed classics." It will recall Graham's sources of inspiration, including modern painting, heroic women, the American frontier and Greek mythology.
Advance tickets are $20 for adults; $18 for seniors, and Appalachian's faculty and staff; $10 for Appalachian's students and for students 18 and under. See www.pas.appstate.edu or call 800-841-ARTS. Tickets bought at the door on the night of the show will increase by $2 in each category.
Note: the Martha Graham Dance Company will also perform at 8 p.m. Saturday in Aycock Auditorium at UNC Greensboro. Tickets for that show are $28-35; see boxoffice.uncg.edu or call 334-4849.
