Q. Old Lexington Road between Sprague Street and Clemmonsville Road has been closed for repairs for what seems like a long time. When will construction be finished? -- L.A.
A. The road was closed in August 2008.
The contractor for the project expects work to be finished by the end of October.
Construction has taken longer than planned because of problems after construction began, said Robert Prestwood, an engineer for the city of Winston-Salem.
Most of those problems came once crews started digging, he said.
"The first issue was that there were more underground utilities that had to be dealt with than we were aware of during the design," Prestwood said.
"The second issue was that we had planned on leaving in place the old existing concrete that was the original road bed. Once this was uncovered, it was in worse condition than we had hoped, and it had to be removed. We had planned for this possibility, but had not factored it into the completion date."
