A Thomasville man was in jail yesterday after police said he struck a bicyclist with his truck and then assaulted him.

Patrick Rashard Byrd, 30, of Thomasville is charged with attempted first-degree murder, according to court records.

The incident happened shortly after 11 a.m. Sunday. Sgt. Les Rickard of the Thomasville Police Department said that Byrd was driving a pickup on Doak Street and that the bicyclist, Craig Harris of Thomasville, was traveling in the same direction but on the other side of the road.

Rickard said that Byrd crossed the road into Harris' path, causing Harris to crash into the truck.

Byrd then got out and beat Harris with an object, Rickard said, but he would not identify the object. Rickard said that Byrd and Harris were acquaintances, but he said he did not know how the two men knew each other.

Harris was in good condition yesterday at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Byrd is being held in the Davidson County jail, with bond set at $250,000.
