Q. Who should we contact about a funeral home that won't give us a corrected death certificate for our mother? She passed away last November, and we are still waiting. -- B.B.

A. The N.C. Vital Records Office in Raleigh can help. It is responsible for registering and maintaining records on all births, deaths, marriages and divorces that occur in the state.

It works with hospitals, funeral directors, registers of deeds, health departments and others who register important life events. It finds and provides copies of vital records when they are requested for passports, research, official identification or other purposes.

Write to N.C. Vital Records, and include your mother's full name, birth date, when and where she died, and any other information relevant to her death. Include the funeral home's name.

The address is 1903 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699. You also can call 919-733-3000.

Most services require a fee.

Q. Goodwill on University Parkway used to hold a biweekly sale for items not suitable for the retail store. Is it true that those items are now being thrown away? -- C.F.

A. Goodwill no longer has a dock sale at the University Parkway location, but those items are not being thrown away. They are now sold at Goodwill's new outlet store at 2760 Peters Creek Parkway.

Practically all of the clothing and linens donated are sold through Goodwill's retail stores, outlet stores or textile-recycling operations. Fewer than 1 percent of donations are discarded because of mold, mildew or other sanitation reasons.
