State/area men

Virginia Tech 71, Campbell 60: J.T. Thompson scored a season-high 17 points and Virginia Tech pulled away late for a victory against Campbell last night in Buies Creek.
Malcolm Delaney shook off a rough shooting night to finish with 15 points and reach the 1,000-point mark for his career with the Hokies (3-0).

UNC Charlotte 88, Yale 74: Shamari Spears scored a career-high 28 points to lead UNC Charlotte past Yale last night in Hempstead, N.Y.
Spears, who sat out last season after transferring from Boston College, shot 13 for 15 from the field for the 49ers (3-1) in the NIT Season Tip-Off. He has scored 20-plus points in all three of his games for UNC Charlotte, which rebounded from losing to No. 7 Duke.

Northern Iowa 81, Boston College 69: Kwadzo Ahelegbe scored 20 of his 32 points in the second half to lead Northern Iowa past Boston College in the fourth-place game of the Paradise Jam last night in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.
Boston College had no answer for Ahelegbe, who was 14 of 17 from the field and hit all three of his attempts from beyond the arc.

Hofstra 70, Elon 46: Cornelius Vines scored 17 points and Hofstra beat Elon in the NIT Season Tip-Off consolation bracket last night in New York.
Greg Washington and Nathaniel Lester each added 12 points for the Pride (3-2). Lester contributed seven rebounds, three blocks and three steals. The Pride won their second game in a row and have 51 wins in their last 61 games at the Mack Sports Complex.

James Madison 79, N.C. Central 66: Darren White led four players in double figures with 20 points and James Madison beat N.C. Central in the 2K Sports Classic yesterday in Miami.
White made 7 of 14 field goals as the Dukes (2-2) shot 54.7 percent from the field (29-for-53). He also had nine rebounds.

Pierre Curtis had 16 points, Dazzmond Thornton added 14 off the bench and Julius Wells had 13 for the Dukes, who won their second straight game.

Top 25 men

Clemson 102, Winthrop 66: Trevor Booker had 15 points and 11 rebounds to help Clemson beat visiting Winthrop last night.
The Tigers (4-0) haven't lost in college basketball's opening month since a 79-70 at Boston College on Nov. 26, 2004.
It's a streak Booker and the Tigers easily increased against overmatched Winthrop (2-2).

Top 25 women

No. 10 Duke 57, UNC Charlotte 44: Joy Cheek scored 12 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to help Duke defeat UNC Charlotte last night in Durham.

Jasmine Thomas added 10 points and a career-high eight assists for the Blue Devils (3-1), who overcame an early deficit with a 15-0 run in the first half.

No. 9 Xavier 92, Mississippi Valley State 52: Freshman Katie Rutan scored a career-high 17 points and Xavier used its bench liberally while pulling away from Mississippi Valley State last night in Cincinnati.
Xavier (3-0) was coming off a 13-point win over then-No. 14 Arizona State and had travel in mind when it took the court. The Musketeers had a 5 a.m. bus to the airport on Tuesday for a flight to the Bahamas, where they will play No. 18 Kansas.
They played like a team that wanted to get it over fast and get some rest, pulling ahead 35-9 as coach Kevin McGuff substituted freely. The 92 points were Xavier's most in two years.
The Devilettes (1-1) were led by Ashley Brown's 15 points. Erin Floyd scored 10 points to lead UNC Charlotte (1-3), which trailed by as many as 20 points in the second half.
