DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Lee Westwood of England became Europe's No. 1 golfer yesterday after winning the Dubai World Championship by six strokes.

Westwood shot a course-record 8-under 64 in the final round to finish at 23-under 265. He made $1.25 million with the 31st victory of his career to overtake Rory McIlroy on the season-long money list and win the European Tour's first Race to Dubai since it changed from the European Order of Merit.

Ross McGowan of England was second after a 68, and McIlroy, of Northern Ireland, shot 67 to finish third at 273.

Kristy McPherson finished off a 5-under 67 in fading sunlight in Richmond, Texas, yesterday and took a one-stroke lead in the LPGA Tour Championship before the second round was suspended because of darkness.

McPherson was 8 under, one shot ahead of South Korea's Jiyai Shin, who had two holes to play. Lorena Ochoa, dueling with Shin for the player-of-the-year and scoring title, was two strokes back in a tie for third with one hole to play.

Heavy rain swamped the course Friday and Saturday, forcing tournament officials to cut play to 54 holes.

Miscellaneous

Roger Federer overcame an erratic forehand and Fernando Verdasco yesterday, rallying for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 win in the round-robin stage of the ATP World Tour Finals in London. The top-ranked Federer was broken once -- in the opening game of the Group A match after double-faulting on the first point -- but he never looked dominating until late in the second set.

In an early Group A match, Andy Murray overcame a second-set slump to beat Juan Martin del Potro 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

In Group B today, Rafael Nadal will play Robin Soderling, and Novak Djokovic will play Nikolay Davydenko.

John Crews of Raleigh became the first U.S.-born man to win the Philadelphia Marathon since 2000, racing to victory by more than six minutes yesterday. Crews, 25, finished in 2:17:15.
