UNC, Duke advance in men's soccer

North Carolina 2, Brown 0: Sophomores Billy Schuler and Alex Dixon scored goals to lift No. 5 seed North Carolina past Brown in the second round of the NCAA men's soccer tournament yesterday in Chapel Hill.
Sophomore Kirk Urso assisted on both goals, setting up Schuler's header on a free kick in the 20th minute and feeding Dixon near midfield in the 89th, and keeper Brooks Haggerty went the distance for his eighth shutout.
UNC (14-2-3) will play Indiana in Chapel Hill in a third-round match at 2 p.m. next Sunday.
Duke 2, Michigan State 1: Duke used two first-half goals and solid second-half defense to upend No. 14 Michigan State yesterday in a second-round match in East Lansing, Mich.
Duke, in the third round for the first time since 2006, will play at Wake Forest next Sunday.
Junior defender Christian Ibeagha and freshman defender Andrew Wenger scored for the Blue Devils, then helped hold off the charging Spartans in the second half.
Duke finished with a 13-7 advantage in shots, including 7-0 in the first half.
Portland 2, N.C. State 1: Ryan Luke scored in the 63rd minute yesterday to lift Portland to a second-round win in Raleigh.
Portland (12-5-5) took a 1-0 lead on Drew Chrostek's 15-yard shot to the corner of the net just 1:03 into the match, but State (13-7-2) equalized at 58:23 when Akil DeFreitas took Chrystel Bakong's through ball and lofted a shot over keeper Justin Baarts. The tie lasted less than four minutes before Luke scored on Collen Warner's assist.
