An Appalachian State University student died after he was accidentally shot early yesterday in an apartment near campus, Boone police said.

Jay Franklin Derby, 19, of Matthews was killed when someone inside the apartment fired a gun, WGHP/FOX8 reported.

The shooting occurred about 12:30 a.m. at the Appalachian South Apartments on Faculty Street, Boone police said. Officers, along with Watauga medics, arrived to find Derby fatally injured.

Seven people were inside the apartment when the shooting took place, WGHP/FOX8 reported. No one has been charged in the incident, but police are continuing to investigate.

Police have not released the name of the person believed to have fired the gun, but officials said the person may have been an acquaintance of Derby's, WGHP/FOX8 reported.

Man has serious stab wounds from fight on Penner Street

A fight Saturday night sent a man to the hospital with stab wounds, Winston-Salem police said.

Police were called to a disturbance at an apartment complex at 110 Penner St. about 8:45 p.m.

They found Samuel Williams, 28, of Winston-Salem with several serious cuts and stab wounds on his side, back and arm. Paramedics took Williams to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, where he was treated and released yesterday, hospital officials said.

Police cited Marcus Duane Mc-Connell, 51, of Winston-Salem for affray and released him.

The investigation into the incident is continuing.

Charlotte residents say they're living in fear of coyotes

CHARLOTTE -- The North Carolina city that supports Panthers and Bobcats wants no part of the real four-legged predators roaming its neighborhoods.

Coyotes are terrorizing residents in Charlotte, who fear for their small children and animals.

Those residents are also discovering that county animal control doesn't respond to coyote calls, referring residents to state officials and private contractors who trap wildlife for a fee.

Several communities on the city's south side have been on alert. Residents in one neighborhood say a cat was eaten by a coyote several weeks ago, prompting the pet owner to circulate a flier warning residents.

Coyotes are not generally aggressive toward people, though a Union County man was bitten last year by a rabid one.

Police investigate handling of man's homicide-suicide call

FAYETTEVILLE -- Police are still investigating their handling of a 911 call from the home of a North Carolina man who shot his wife and two children before he turned the gun on himself.

Although an operator followed protocol in taking the call from the home of Billy Maxwell Jr. earlier this month, investigators want to know why it took more than an hour to dispatch an officer.

While police haven't said whether their call-center equipment could have played a role, they acknowledge that it needs an upgrade.

Fayetteville's emergency operations center had its last major upgrade in 1999. Officials learned then that the system didn't work properly.

Those problems are expected to be fixed by mid-February, when the city begins using a new, $3.2 million computer-assisted dispatch system.

Palin makes stop on book tour to visit evangelist Graham

ASHEVILLE -- Sarah Palin sat down for dinner yesterday with the Rev. Billy Graham and is planning a stop today in Eastern North Carolina as a part of her book tour.

The former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee was to fly into Asheville yesterday afternoon and then go to Billy Graham's mountaintop home in Montreat for dinner, said Jeremy Blume, a spokesman for Graham's son Franklin.

Franklin Graham issued the invitation to Palin. "He just saw that she was going to be in the area and he said to come by," Blume said.
