Writers Notebook: Winston-Salem author wins 3 awards for her insider's take

Chris Roerden, a member of Winston-Salem Writers, won the Book of the Year Royal Palm Literary Award from the Florida Writers Association for her book Don't Sabotage Your Submission.

Don't Sabotage Your Submission is an "insider" analysis of writing for publication, published by Bella Rosa Books of Rock Hill, S.C. It draws on Roerden's 44 years of experience in book publishing and editing.

It also won the Benjamin Franklin Award for Literary Criticism of 2009 and ForeWord Magazine's bronze medal for Writing Book of the Year.

Anderson O'Brien to be featured poet at reading

Anderson O'Brien will be the featured poet at The Word Is Out open-mike poetry reading, scheduled for 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Central Library auditorium, at 660 W. Fifth St.

Those interested in poetry and spoken word may read their own or others' works, or just listen. The optional theme will be "Treasured Gifts."

Contributors to Watauga history to discuss work

People who worked on the Watauga County Historical Society's recently published book The Architectural History of Watauga County, North Carolina will talk about the project during a reception at Appalachian State University.

The reception will be 4-6 p.m. Tuesday at the Belk Library. Light refreshments will be available.

The 356-page book contains more than 600 illustrations in color and black-and-white, as well as descriptions of about 300 properties.
