No. 9 Xavier 59, No. 14 Arizona State 46: Freshman Katie Rutan made three consecutive 3s during a first-half run that put Xavier ahead to stay, and had a steal and layup that ended Arizona State's comeback and sent lifted the Musketeers past the Sun Devils yesterday in Cincinnati.
Xavier (2-0) never trailed after Rutan came off the bench to lead a 13-point run. She also had a steal and layup after the Sun Devils (2-1) cut the lead to 38-36 in the second half.
Xavier pulled away by holding the Sun Devils to one basket in the next 11 minutes.
Rutan finished with 13 points. Amber Harris had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Xavier, which was playing with the highest ranking in school history.
Danielle Orsillo led Arizona State with 11 points on 4-of-15 shooting.
No. 7 LSU 72, Houston 54: Freshman reserve Adrienne Webb scored 17 points to lead LSU past Houston yesterday in Baton Rouge, La.
LSU senior guard Allison Hightower scored 16 points and Katherine Graham had 10 points and 11 rebounds. Taylor Turnbow added 12 points for LSU (3-0).
Courtney Taylor led Houston (3-1) with 18 points and nine rebounds.
Turnbow helped LSU build a 31-22 halftime lead with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Turnbow scored on three consecutive possessions during a span of nearly five minutes when Houston was held scoreless.
No. 20 Oklahoma 74, TCU 70: Abi Olajuwon scored a career-high 23 points and Danielle Robinson added 16 as Oklahoma bounced back from its first loss of the season to beat TCU yesterday in Norman, Okla.
Olajuwon, the daughter of former NBA player Hakeem Olajuwon, steadied the Sooners (2-1) inside during another poor performance from 3-point range. She made 11 of her 15 shots, while Oklahoma connected on just 27 percent of its 3-point attempts.
The Sooners had to hold off a late charge by TCU, which closed a seven-point deficit to 72-70 in the final minute. Robinson hit two free throws with 7.2 seconds left to seal the victory.
Starr Crawford led the Horned Frogs (2-1) with 19 points and 13 rebounds, and Helena Sverrisdottir had 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Winston-Salem State 66, Presbyterian 65 (OT): Chloe Morse scored with three seconds remaining to lift Winston-Salem State past Presbyterian in an overtime thriller in the Morehead State Invitational Tournament yesterday in Morehead, Ky.
Rene Rector led the Rams (2-2) with 24 points and Vontisha Woods had 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Morse's game-winning basket came after Woods missed an inside shot and Morse grabbed the rebound and scored on a layup.
Mariah Pietrowski led Presbyterian (0-4) with 23 points.
It was the first two-game winning streak for the Rams since the 2006-07 season.
Winston-Salem State will play Morehead State at 3:30 p.m. today.
High Point 75, UNC Greensboro 63: Shamia Brown scored 20 points to lead High Point past UNC Greensboro yesterday.
Also in double figures for the Panthers (2-1) were Jurica Hargraves (13), Amy Dodd (12) and Laura Reynolds (11).
Monique Floyd led UNCG (1-2) with 13 points and Lakiah Hyson had 10.
High Point, which forced 33 turnovers, broke the game open with a 28-8 run in the second half.
Salisbury 61, Salem 42: Glen Charlton and Kylie Hall each scored 13 points to lead Salisbury past visiting Salem yesterday.
Shamaz Denerson led Salem with 16 points.
Salem led 25-21 at halftime, but was outscored 40-17 in the second half.
Guilford 68, Wilkes 54: Ann Seufer scored 17 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead Guilford past Wilkes in the consolation game of the Jim Crawley Tournament yesterday in Frostburg, Md.
Lauren LeFevers added 12 points for Guilford.
UNC Asheville 82, Lees-McRae 58: Dana Wagner scored 16 points and Linda Aughburns had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead UNC Asheville past visiting Lees-McRae yesterday.
Icey Patterson led Lees-McRae with 12 points and Colette Montgomery had 10.
