A well-known barn in eastern Davie County is getting a new lease on life.
Officials with Sterling Events in Clemmons said yesterday that they plan to renovate the Win-Mock farm barn, which was built in the late 1920s, and two other buildings.
Andrea Bailey, the director of marketing for Sterling Events, said that Sterling wants to create an upscale site to hold weddings, meetings, and other events. The barn, which has 17,000 square feet, is in the Kinderton development.
"It's amazing and in great shape," Bailey said. "It would be great to breathe new life into the barn."
She said that a feasibility study is under way and that it should be completed by the end of the year. Construction could begin in early 2010 and be finished about March 2011.
In addition to renovating the farm buildings, Sterling also plans to build a 12,000-square-foot addition near the barn for the company's offices and warehouse. Bailey estimated the cost of renovating the barn to be about $2 million.
Win-Mock was built by S. Clay Williams, a former president of Reynolds Tobacco Co. Its name came about because it was nine miles from Winston-Salem and nine miles from Mocksville.
Lee Rollins, the Bermuda Run town manager, said that town officials are excited about Sterling's plans. He called the barn an icon of eastern Davie County.
"I think it will be good not only for Davie County but also for the Clemmons area," he said.
The area is rapidly changing from farms and agriculture to residential and commercial subdivisions. Renovating the barn and outbuildings will preserve some of the heritage of the area, he said.
"It will keep a rural feeling," Rollins said.
