FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.
Appalachian State's bid for a second upset against Arkansas fell just short last night.
The Mountaineers charged back from an early 20-point deficit to take the lead down the stretch, but lost 81-72 in overtime at Walton Arena.
Two years ago, the Mountaineers beat the Razorbacks 74-68 in Little Rock.
Marshawn Powell, a freshman forward, made the biggest difference last night. He led all scorers with 29 points for the Razorbacks (2-1). Rotnei Clark added 16 points, and Mike Washington had 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Donald Sims, who scored 24 points as a freshman in the Mountaineers' victory against the Razorbacks two years ago, led them again last night with 17 points. He was 5 of 9 from 3-point range.
Kellen Brand added 13 points and Josh Hunter had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Mountaineers, who battled foul trouble down the stretch.
The Mountaineers (2-2) trailed 26-6 little more than nine minutes into play after a disastrous start.
But they chipped away in the first eight minutes of the second half with runs of 8-2, 8-0 and 8-0 and took a 53-51 lead on Brand's drive with 8:06 left in regulation.
The Razorbacks regained the lead and extended it to as many as seven points with three minutes to go in regulation but a 3-pointer by Sims closed the gap. After two missed free throws by the Razorbacks with 21 seconds left, a well-guarded Sims dished to Hunter, whose 3-pointer with 6.5 seconds left tied the score at 68. It was the fourth 3-point attempt of Hunter's career.
Clarke's shot at the end of regulation rimmed out.
The Razorbacks took control from the start of overtime, scoring the first seven points. The Mountaineers, who hit 1 of 6 field-goal attempts and turned the ball over three times in overtime, never got closer than six.
The Mountaineers shot 38 percent from the field, but hit 10 3-pointers, outrebounded the Razorbacks 39-38 and had two fewer turnovers, 15-13. The Razorbacks shot 50 percent.
The Mountaineers jumped to a 4-0 lead to start the game, but it was short-lived as the Razorbacks stormed back with authority with a 26-2 run.
