Men's College-Basketball Roundup: Tennessee romps past East Carolina

No. 10 Tennessee 105, East Carolina 66: Scotty Hopson scored 25 points to lead Tennessee past East Carolina in the opening round of the Paradise Jam yesterday in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.

Hopson was 10 of 15 from the floor, including 4 of 5 from beyond the arc, in the Vols' first game at the University of Virgin Islands Sports and Fitness Center.

Bobby Maze added 15 points for the Vols, while Cameron Tatum had 14 and Tyler Smith 13. Melvin Goins finished with 10 points and five assists.

The Vols (3-0) smothered the Pirates (1-3) with their self-styled "controlled chaos" press, forcing 35 turnovers, the most in Bruce Pearl's five years as Tennessee coach.

East Carolina was competitive early, using an 8-0 run to take a 17-13 lead on Brock Young's steal and layup at the 12:01 mark of the first half.

No. 2 Michigan State 75, Toledo 62: Draymond Green had 15 points to lead a balanced attack, and Michigan State beat Toledo yesterday in East Lansing, Mich.

The game was a regional matchup in the Legends Classic. The Spartans (3-0) are home to Valparaiso on Sunday before heading to Atlantic City, N.J., for a Nov. 27 date with Florida in the semifinals.

The Spartans won their 42nd straight game at home against a nonconference opponent, extending a streak that started after a loss to Duke on Dec. 3, 2003.

No. 5 Villanova 71, No. 18 Dayton 65: Corey Fisher scored 18 points to lead Villanova past Dayton in the second round of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off yesterday in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Fisher was 10 for 12 from the free-throw line and converted his last four shots in the final minutes to help the Wildcats (4-0) hold off a late rally from the Flyers.

Villanova led by 18 points early in the second half, but Dayon trimmed the lead to 62-60 with 2:23 to play when London Warren converted two free throws after he was fouled on a breakaway.

Villanova scored its last nine points on free throws and finished 22 of 29 from the foul line. Taylor King had 14 points and nine rebounds for the Wildcats.

No. 7 Purdue 74, South Dakota State 63: E'Twaun Moore scored 22 points and Purdue beat South Dakota State in the first round of the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.

Robbie Hummel added 14 points despite missing much of the action because of foul trouble, and JaJuan Johnson had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Boilermakers (2-0). Purdue will play St. Joseph's on Sunday night in second round.

No. 15 Michigan 77, Houston Baptist 55: Manny Harris scored 25 points, and DeShawn Sims added 22 to help Michigan beat Houston Baptist last night in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Harris and Sims each had 12 points during a decisive 29-13 run at the end of the first half that put Michigan (2-0) in front for good.

Mario Flaherty scored 17 points, and Andrew Gonzalez had 14 for the Huskies (0-4).

No. 15 Ohio State 76, No. 13 California 70: Evan Turner had 26 points and 14 rebounds and Ohio State beat California last night in the third-place game of the 2K Sports Classic in New York City.

The Buckeyes (3-1) went through an opposite experience from their 77-73 loss to No. 6 North Carolina in the semifinals of the tournament that benefits Coaches vs. Cancer.

No. 21 Georgia Tech 70, George Mason 62: Gani Lawal had 18 points and 14 rebounds to lead Georgia Tech past George Mason in the consolation round of the O'Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tip-Off yesterday in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Lawal scored six of his team's last 15 points as the Yellow Jackets (2-1) held off a late rally by the Patriots.

No. 22 Clemson 89, UNC Greensboro 67: Trevor Booker scored a season-high 17 points, and Clemson routed UNC Greensboro last night at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Milton Jennings added 14 points for the Tigers (3-0), Andre Young had 13 and David Potter finished with 11.

No. 25 Maryland 82, New Hampshire 55: Landon Milbourne scored a career-high 24 points, and Maryland cruised past New Hampshire last night in College Park, Md.

Sophomore guard Sean Mosley had 13 points and a career-best 10 assists, and Eric Hayes scored 15 for Maryland (3-0). After three straight blowouts at home, the Terrapins will head to Hawaii to play three games in three days, beginning Tuesday.

Miami 67, UNC Wilmington 60: Malcolm Grant scored 18 points and Miami defeated UNC Wilmington yesterday in Charleston, S.C.

The Hurricanes (4-0) led 62-58 with 29 seconds to play and forced two Seahawks' turnovers to hold on and advance to the championship round of the Charleston Classic at 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Saint Joseph's 84, Boston College 80: Garrett Williamson scored 10 of his 18 points in the final two minutes, and Saint Joseph's beat Boston College in the opening round of the Paradise Jam last night in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.

Williamson's layup with 1:57 left tied the game, and his three-point play with 38 seconds left gave the Hawks (3-0) a 79-76 lead.

Reggie Jackson pulled Boston College (2-1) within 79-78 seconds later, but Williamson answered with two more free throws.

La Salle 84, Davidson 70: Rodney Green scored 21 points and La Salle defeated Davidson last night in Charleston, S.C.

Green, who also had 10 rebounds and four assists, led five players in double figures for the Explorers (2-1).

Florida International 83, N.C. Central 73: Marvin Roberts had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Florida International past N.C. Central last night in Miami.

The Golden Panthers, under first-year head coach Isiah Thomas, have won their last two after starting the season 0-3.

Phil Gary Jr. added 18 points and six assists for the Golden Panthers, who shot 60.7 percent from the field (17 for 28) in the second half of the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer.

After the sixth tie of the first half, FIU took the lead for good when Antoine Watson scored inside to make it 32-30 and start a 6-0 run. Gary hit a jumper with two seconds left to close out the half 36-30.

In the second half, an 8-0 run gave the Golden Panthers a 66-54 lead and they never led by fewer than six after that.

Antoine Watson contributed 14 points and six assists for FIU.

The Eagles (1-3) were led by Vincent Davis, who had 23 points and nine rebounds. C.J. Wilkerson added 21 points.

N.C. Central shot 39.7 percent from the field (25-for-63) and committed 17 team turnovers.

FIU shot 50 percent in the game (31-for-62).
