State/area men

Colorado State 57, Winston-Salem State 40: Andre McFarland scored 13 points and Colorado State overcame a turnover-filled first half to beat Winston-Salem State in the BTI Tip-Off Tournament yesterday in Eugene, Ore.

McFarland was 5 of 11 from the field, 3 of 6 from 3-point range, and added four rebounds for Colorado State (2-0).

Winston-Salem State (0-2) led by as many as 10 points in the first half, helped by 12 Colorado State turnovers.

The Rams scored six straight points in the second half to take a 29-28 lead and went a nine-point run to lead by 13 in the final three minutes to win it.

Winston-Salem State didn't score in the second half until forward McIntoche Alcius hit a free throw at the 12:51 mark.

Shelton Carter led Winston-Salem State with 14 points and eight rebounds.

Miami 83, N.C. Central 53: Adrian Thomas scored 16 points and Miami defeated N.C. Central yesterday or Coral Gables, Fla.

Thomas was 6 for 9 from the field, including 4 for 7 from the 3-point line. Dwayne Collins finished with 12 points and six rebounds for Miami.

The Hurricanes pulled away with a 14-2 spurt in the final 4:42 of the first half. Julian Gamble scored six straight points during the run, including a fast-break dunk for Miami's first double-digit lead at 36-25 with 1:25 left in the half.

Gamble was Miami's third scorer in double figures with 10 points.

Vincent Davis led the Eagles with 16 points. Central (0-2) lost its season opener 89-42 at defending NCAA champion North Carolina on Wednesday.

High Point 104, UNC Pembroke 72: Nick Barbour scored 38 points to lead High Point past visiting UNC Pembroke last night.

Barbour shot 13 for 16 from the field, including 10 for 11 from 3-point range for the Panthers. Eugene Harris added 13 points, and Corey Law chipped in with 11.

Shahmel Brackett scored 17 points to lead the Braves. Ty Alston added 13.

High Point took a 20-4 lead to open the game after Barbour's dunk with 12:36 remaining in the first half. They would lead 55-23 at halftime.

A separate 15-2 run in the second half, capped by a 3-pointer by Barbour, gave High Point a 70-30 lead with 15:59 left in the game.

The Panthers shot 58 percent from the field (38 for 65), including 52 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (12 for 23). They also totaled 15 steals and forced 28 turnovers.

Western Carolina 65, St. Catharine 41: Brandon Giles and Kendall Russell scored 12 points each to lead Western Carolina past St. Catharine College last night in Cullowhee.

Harouna Mutombo added eight points and seven rebounds for the Catamounts in their season opener. Blake Gallagher also had seven rebounds for Western Carolina.

The Catamounts used a 13-0 run in the second half to take a 42-23 lead following a 3-pointer by Giles with 13:56 remaining in the game. The Catamounts led by as many as 24 points, which was their final margin of victory.

The Catamounts shot 41.8 percent from the field in the game (28 for 67), while St. Catharine shot 25 percent (11 for 44).

Gardner-Webb 89, Covenant 48: Auryn MacMillan had 17 points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots as Gardner-Webb opened its season with a win against Covenant College last night in Boiling Springs.

MacMillan, a senior from Melbourne, Australia, made 8 of 10 shots while playing 20 minutes. Senior Grayson Flittner, playing point guard for the Bulldogs for the first time, scored 8 points, had 6 assists and 2 steals in 20 minutes.

Gardner-Webb used a 30-2 run to take a 39-12 lead over the Division III Scots with just more than four minutes before halftime. The Bulldogs led by as much as 44 points in the second half.

Elon 91, Lipscomb 86: Josh Bonney scored 24 points and Drew Spradlin added 23 as Elon edged Lipscomb last night in Nashville, Tenn.

The Phoenix victory marked the first career win for new coach Matt Matheny.

Lipscomb jumped out to a 16-7 lead behind 13 points from Brandon Brown, but the Bison couldn't overcome a strong shooting performance by Elon, which was 35 for 69 from the field (50.7 percent).

Top 25 men

No. 11 Butler 73, Davidson 62: Gordon Hayward scored 17 points and Willie Veasley added 15 to lead Butler past Davidson yesterday in Indianapolis.

The Bulldogs (1-0) rallied twice from 10-point deficits in the first half, then used a late run to seal it.

Davidson (0-1) was led by Ben Allison with 13 points and Brendan McKillop with 11.

It certainly wasn't a picture perfect start for Butler, which was trying to protect the highest preseason ranking in school history.

No. 15 Michigan 97, Northern Michigan 50: Manny Harris had 18 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists to lead Michigan past Northern Michigan yesterday in Ann Arbor, Mich.

DeShawn Sims added 22 points for Michigan, while true freshman Matt Vogrich scored 15 points with a 5-for-5 performance from behind the 3-point line.

Marc Renelique had 11 points for the Wildcats, who trailed by as many as 50 points.

No. 17 Oklahoma 95, Mount St. Mary's 71: Steven Pledger scored 21 points and Oklahoma's much-heralded freshman class lifted the Sooners past Mount St. Mary's yesterday in Norman, Okla.

Another freshman, Keith "Tiny" Gallon, had 18 points and 15 rebounds, while sophomore Willie Warren added 15 points and a career-high 11 assists for Oklahoma, which has won 23 of its last 25 season openers.

The win was the 1,499th in Oklahoma's history, the 29th-highest total in NCAA Division I.

No. 21 Dayton 90, Creighton 80: Chris Johnson had 18 points and 15 rebounds and Chris Wright led a second-half surge that carried Dayton past visiting Creighton in an opening matchup of teams that won 27 games apiece last season.

Dayton, ranked in the preseason poll for the first time since 1967, overcame a 10-point deficit in the first half and regrouped, pulling away in the closing minutes. The Flyers won their 21st in a row on their home floor, tying the school record.

P'Allen Stinnett scored 18 points to lead the Bluejays, who haven't beaten a ranked team on the road since they upset Larry Bird's Indiana State team on Jan. 28, 1978.

No. 22 Georgia Tech 100, Florida A&M 59: Iman Shumpert scored 18 points and capped a decisive run in the first half, and Georgia Tech showed off its freshmen in its win over Florida A&M yesterday in Atlanta.

Derrick Favors, the biggest name in Georgia Tech's heralded freshman class, started and had 10 points and eight rebounds. Another freshman, Brian Oliver, had 12 points, all in the second half.

Junior Gani Lawal added 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Top 25 women

No. 1 Connecticut 105, Northeastern 35: Tina Charles scored 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Connecticut began the defense of its sixth national title with a Northeastern yesterday in Storrs, Conn.

Charles, who pulled down her 1,000th career rebound in the first half, was one of six Huskies in double figures.

State/area women

Vermont 52, N.C. State 47: May Kotsopoulos scored 21 points and Courtnay Pilypaitis added 15 to lead Vermont past N.C. State yesterday in Raleigh.

Nikitta Gartrell led State with 10 points.

Newberry 66, UNC Asheville 53: Helen McKinney scored 19 points and Anita Bulcher added 16 points and 11 rebounds as visiting Newberry beat UNC Asheville yesterday.

Lindsey Montgomery led UNCA with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Piedmont Baptist 60, Trinity Baptist 36: Erica Buffaloe scored 16 points, Emily Buffaloe had 15 and Laura Denson 12 to lead Piedmont Baptist past Trinity Baptist yesterday in Jacksonville, Fla.

Erica Buffaloe finished with 11 rebounds and Emily Buffaloe had six assists.
