STUART, VA. -- A Virginia mother and her son were charged Tuesday with accessory after the fact in connection with the Nov. 1 shooting deaths of four men in Mount Airy, authorities said.

Gonzalez is accused of killing Juan Manuel Martinez, 26; Javier Manuel Martinez, 21; Victor Alfonso Martinez-Jimemez, 22, all of Mount Airy; and Marcos Oviedo Aguilar, 21, of Surry County. A spokeswoman for the Mount Airy police said she didn't have details about the accusations against Barnette and Holt.

Body identified as Kernersville man

Winston-Salem police identified yesterday the man who was found floating in Salem Lake on Saturday.

John Charles Woodward, 60, of 5124 Beulah Lane near Kernersville, was found in the lake by a jogger about 8:30 a.m., said Sgt. Jerry Pegram of the Winston-Salem Police Department. Investigators also found Woodward's bike in the lake, near where his body was found.

Foul play is not suspected. Police say they believe that Woodward was riding his bike on the trails around the lake, lost control and crashed into the water.

Poll: Economy worries Southerners

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- A new poll shows that Southerners are fretting about job loss and the economy, and don't think that the federal government is doing enough to help.

The Winthrop Poll, released yesterday, found that four in 10 respondents say that the economy is a top concern. Nearly that many are worried about losing jobs.

Scott Huffmon, a political-science professor at Winthrop University, says that the worries mean that people may spend less, hindering an economic recovery.

The poll of 866 people in 11 states found nearly three-quarters of people wanted new government programs to create jobs and nearly two-thirds thought that states in serious financial trouble should get federal aid.

The telephone poll conducted between Oct. 24 and Nov. 7 has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.3 percent.

Pastor in sex case released from jail

LELAND -- A pastor in Eastern North Carolina has been released from jail after being arrested on charges of having sex with a child.

James T. Johnson, 46, was released from the Brunswick County Jail after a church member put up property as collateral. Johnson, the founder of The Olive Branch church in Leland, was being held on a $100,000 bond.

He was arrested Nov. 3 on six charges, including taking indecent liberties and first-degree sex offense against a child. Authorities say that the victim is a 13-year-old girl.

Johnson's attorney, Robert Epstein, said that Johnson says he is not guilty.
