WICHITA, Kan. -- Defiant and unapologetic, a man accused of shooting a Kansas abortion provider confessed to the killing yesterday, telling The Associated Press that he killed the doctor to protect unborn children.
Scott Roeder, 51, of Kansas City, Mo., spoke to the AP in a telephone call from jail, saying he plans to argue at his trial that he was justified in shooting Dr. George Tiller at the abortion provider's Wichita church in May.
SALT LAKE CITY -- Defense attorneys for the man charged in the abduction of Elizabeth Smart argued yesterday that testimony by experts in Mormon fundamentalism and religious extremism is irrelevant and should not be allowed at a hearing to decide his mental competency.
Attorneys for Brian David Mitchell told U.S. District Judge Dale Kimball that an expert's comparison of religious beliefs would not prove or disprove Mitchell's competency.
CHICAGO -- Two videos produced by Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida terrorist network have been found in the home of a Chicago man accused of plotting an armed attack on a Danish newspaper, federal prosecutors said.
Bin Laden appears on one of the DVDs, and other footage focused on the cartoons depicting Prophet Muhammad published in the Copenhagen newspaper. Those cartoons sparked outrage in much of the Muslim world.

LOS ANGELES -- Four years after its first solar sail ended up in the ocean instead of orbit, The Planetary Society announced yesterday that by the end of 2010 it will try again to launch a spacecraft that will be propelled by the subtle pressure of sunlight.
LightSail-1 is envisioned as the first of a trio of solar sail craft. Solar sails are theorized as a way to achieve long-duration interstellar flight.
