□ Lauren Burch recently sponsored a pink luau at the American Legion Post in Winston-Salem to help raise awareness of breast cancer. Many of the attendees wore pink, and those who did not were draped in pink leis. All proceeds benefited the American Cancer Society.
□ Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina has received a $10,000 donation from Liberty Hardware Manufacturing Corporation. The money will be used for the food bank's Triad Community Kitchen program.
Students at the Triad Community Kitchen use donated and purchased food to create ready-to-heat meals for distribution by partner agencies. Students are referred by program partners like Goodwill Industries and receive culinary training at no charge.
□ A video produced by Summit School eighth-grade students was one of four selected from 100 submissions as national winners in a contest sponsored by the National Middle School Association. The video, titled Summit School: Making a World of Difference, focuses on ways in which Summit students are inspired to reach out to help others through such programs as H20 for Life, learn about being responsible global citizens through campus green initiatives, and connect with other students through web technologies.
Students Mary Grace Budd, Brennen Carr, Claire Hess, Hope Kelly, Alden Knight, Catherine Macon, Elizabeth Meinberg, Sarah Phillips Orr and Emma Strickland produced the video in Henry Heidtmann's video-production class. Eighth-graders Bria Mann and Mary Catherine White worked with teacher Josh Perry in Summit's digital media studio to create original music for the video.
□ Shirley A. Clark, a junior at Parkland Magnet High School, has been nominated along with over 300 students nationally to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum on Law and CSI in Washington, D.C. The forum's curriculum is based on actual events, which allows students to learn from the examples set by attorneys and court officials from municipal courts to the U.S. Supreme Court. Throughout the forum, students will examine how court cases often change the legal system.
Shirley is a member of the National Honor Society, Solid Rock Missionary Baptist Church and the Parkland's varsity girls basketball team. She was freshman and sophomore class president, and is currently junior class president at Parkland. She is also a member of the Debs Dance Troop and Finique Modeling Troop of Parkland.
Shirley was awarded a full scholarship to attend the NYL Forum from the University of Maryland's Law School, and was given the registration fee and a gift card for needed supplies and clothing by the Josh Howard Foundation.
□ Theresa Barker Price of Winston-Salem has been admitted to Appalachian State University as a Principal Fellow for the fall of 2009. She is one of only 65 Principal Fellows selected statewide to participate in the two-year program, and will complete a full year of coursework and a ten-month full- time internship while earning her M.S.A.
The Principal Fellows Program is a nationally recognized school leadership program offered in conjunction with ASU and the UNC system.
□ Brittany Scott recently received the American FFA Degree at National FFA Convention in Indianapolis. It is the highest degree awarded by the National FFA Organization, and recognizes her leadership abilities and achievements in agricultural business, production, processing and service programs. She received a gold American FFA Degree key and certificate to commemorate her achievement.
Brittany is currently majoring in agricultural education and extension at Forsyth Technical Community College and N.C. State University, and is a member of the North Davidson FFA Chapter. She is the daughter of Dawn and Junior Scott.
The National FFA Organization is a national youth organization which prepares members for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture.

□ Darren Zhu of Winston-Salem has been awarded a 2009 Davidson Fellow with a $10,000 scholarship at the Davidson Institute for Talent Development, a national nonprofit organization headquartered in Reno, Nev. Darren is being recognized for his efforts to develop more efficient data storage technologies by exploring nanofabrication methods. His work has strong applications in nanotechnology, specifically in the field of nanolithography.
□ Air Force Airman Blake A. London graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, and has earned credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
London is a 2007 graduate of Davie High School, and he is the son of Charles and Regina London of Mocksville.
□ Air Force Airman Sarah L. Timberlake graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, and has earned credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Timberlake is a 2007 graduate of East Forsyth High School, and she is the daughter of Isaiah and Melissa Timberlake of Kernersville.
□ Joel Caudill and Mitchell Nash, both of Boy Scout Troop 335, received the Eagle rank at a court of honor held recently at First United Methodist Church in North Wilkesboro.
For his project, Joel, with the help of fellow Scouts, landscaped an area at Wilkes Central High School.
Joel has served as patrol leader and senior patrol leader. He has earned 21 merit badges, in addition to the Triple Crown by attending Boy Scouts of America high adventure bases in Florida, New Mexico and Canada.
Joel is the son of Joey and Barbara Caudill of Millers Creek.
For his project, Mitchell, with the help of his father and fellow Scouts, built and installed 10 wood duck-nesting boxes along the lake at Herring Ridge.
Mitchell has served as patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader, quartermaster and senior patrol leader, and has earned 25 merit badges.
Mitchell is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Gary Nash of Wilkesboro.
□ Jack Welch, a member of Boy Scout Troop 596 at Central United Methodist Church, has been awarded the rank of Eagle. For his Eagle project, Jack raised $1,280 and obtained $2,250 worth of materials to build a playground for the new Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care. He and 17 of his fellow Scouts built the playground from the ground up, complete with swings, slide, gazebo, sandbox, rock climbing and other features.
Jack has been involved in Scouting for eight years. As a Cub Scout he earned the Arrow of Light, and he recently became involved in the Order of the Arrow.
He is the son of Robert and Ellen Welch, and the brother of Sam Welch.
