SAWMILLS

No one left the Sawmills Fire Department in southern Caldwell County yesterday without a full belly and a grin.

People came to catch up with old friends and chow down on nearly 1,200 pounds of ham during breakfast and lunch at the 20th annual Sawmills Ham Day.

Proceeds will go toward the Christmas party the department gives for county youth and the holiday treats it gives to the community's elderly, Brian Church, Sawmills fire chief, said. Money made is also set aside to help maintain the department's equipment and to support various community needs.

Church said the department had planned on serving about 2,500 people, but ended up serving about that many for breakfast alone.

"It is just a great feeling to interact with everyone while also having fun," Church said. "So many times we see the community when they are at their worst, and this is our opportunity to invite them into our house to see what we do."

Volunteer Zack Abernethy, 11, was working the event for the third straight year.

"I like helping everyone who stops by and seeing them have fun," said Abernethy.
