For Mount Tabor's D.J. McCain, it was just a matter of "going with the flow."
McCain ran for 178 yards on 34 carries with a season-high four touchdowns to lead the Spartans to a lopsided 27-6 victory over West Forsyth Friday night in the battle for second place in the Central Piedmont 4-A Conference.
"We just executed," said McCain, who scored all four times on 1-yard plunges.
"You've got to give it up to the offense, and give it up to the defense."
While McCain led a running game that piled up 298 yards on 60 rushes, the Mount Tabor defense shut down West, except for an 83-yard touchdown strike from Andrew Mitchell to standout receiver Ric Thompson. That play accounted for almost half of the Titans' 170 yards of total offense.
"We wanted to come out tonight and be a physical football team," said Coach Laymarr Marshall of Mount Tabor. "We wanted to run the football and stop the run. I thought we beat a real good football team."
The Spartans finished the regular season with an 8-3 overall record, 4-1 in the CPC, while the Titans, who suffered a crushing loss last week to Reynolds in a battle of unbeaten teams, fell to 9-2 overall and 3-2 in the league.
"We didn't finish like we wanted to," said Coach Adrian Snow of West. "They got after us pretty good."
West played without senior Patrick Midkiff, its starting quarterback. Snow said he had no comment about Midkiff not being suited up for the game.
Mitchell, the backup who had played sparingly this season, completed 5 of 21 passes for 129 yards with Thompson accounting for all but 15 of those receiving yards.
But the Titans had 41 yards rushing, and the offense spent most of its time on the sideline while Mount Tabor controlled the line of scrimmage. During one stretch in the second half, the Spartans ran 34 plays to nine for the Titans.
"We couldn't get them off the field," Snow said.
Marshall couldn't have been happier with the way his Spartans are playing heading into the playoffs.
"We feel like we're really starting to gel," Marshall said. "We feel good with where we are."
