East Forsyth removed all doubt from its murky playoff picture by edging crosstown rival Glenn 17-16 last night for a Piedmont Triad 4-A win.

The win locked up a share of second place in the conference and guaranteed the Eagles a berth in the NCHSAA playoffs, which will begin next Friday night.

East (6-5, 4-2) won its fourth straight game, while Glenn (8-3, 4-2) lost for the second straight week and fell into a three-way tie for second place.

"Now we don't have to hold our breath and hope we get in," Coach Todd Willert of East said. "This was just a huge win."

A draw between East, Glenn, and High Point Central was held last night at Glenn to determine the seeding order among the three teams. Glenn will be seeded second, East third and Central fourth.

The game appeared to be headed to overtime after Kevin Williams of Glenn scored on a 1-yard run with 1:51 left to cut the lead to 17-16, but the extra point was low and never had a chance. Glenn did get the ball back on its own 4-yard line with 46 seconds left, but couldn't get past the 18-yard line before time ran out.

Quinta Harvey gave East a 17-10 lead on a 35-yard interception return for a score in the third quarter that turned the tide of the game.

Receiver Je'Vante Crump of Glenn lost his footing and slipped while the ball was in the air, opening the door for Harvey.

"We know Glenn's not comfortable throwing the ball," Willert said. "We told them to sit on that, and Quinta was in the right place to make the play. He got picked on a lot earlier in the season, but he's really come through for us in conference. Obviously, that was the game-changer right there."

Scotty Walker of East kicked a 25-yard field goal on its first series of the second half to tie the score at 10, the first field goal attempted all season for the Eagles.

Glenn led 10-7 at halftime after a 1-yard touchdown run by Josh Hawkins and a 27-yard field goal by Mitchell Thomlinson.

Hawkins, who finished with 173 yards rushing on 32 carries, was constantly working the left side of the offensive line against an eight-man defensive front. A total of 111 of his yards came in the first half.

East took a 7-0 lead on its first possession on a 29-yard scoring pass to Jarrod Coleman from Erick Smith.

"They did a good job," Coach Dickie Cline of Glenn said. "We did a lot of uncharacteristic things tonight--illegal procedures, jumping offsides--stuff like that. It is what it is.

"We've just got to regroup, and a whole new season starts next week."
