Western N.C. economic index at lowest level in four years

An index that measures economic activity in Western North Carolina reached its lowest level in at least four years during September, according to a report released this week.
The index covers a 25-county region that includes Alleghany, Ashe, Watauga and Wilkes. It dropped by 0.6 percentage points to a reading of 98.4. By comparison, the index was at 102.6 in September 2008.
Todd Cherry, a co-author of the index and a professor of economics at Appalachian State University, said that the sharp increase in the region's jobless rate has hampered economic activity.
