Borders Group Inc. said yesterday that it would close 200 of its Waldenbooks and Borders Express stores, including the stores at Hanes Mall in Winston-Salem and at Four Seasons Town Centre in Greensboro.
The company said it wants to focus on its more profitable Borders superstores. It said it would cut 1,500 jobs as part of this move, which will take effect in January.
Six other stores in North Carolina are also on the closure list: Asheville, Chapel Hill, Hickory, Monroe, New Bern and Shelby.
When the closings are completed, Borders will have 130 of these smaller stores remaining.
