RHYTHM AND BLUES:Canadian singer-songwriter Garnet Rogers comes to Winston-Salem this weekend for another meeting of the Fiddle and Bow Society. The Boston Globe calls Rogers' voice "a glorious bass that shimmers with danger and grace." Indeed, it's a baritone that you could imagine easily accompanying you on a road trip, his songs undulating as the asphalt that unfurls before your dashboard.

Tuesday November 10
THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING: Coming to Central Library, that is. A group of folk musicians from Russia will give a free concert at 7 p.m. Balalaikas are traditional Russian instruments that look like large, triangular ukeleles, or small guitars. They certainly aren't something you'll see very often in Winston-Salem.
A dessert reception will follow Tuesday's concert, which is sponsored by the library and the Russian Cultural Center-Embassy of Russian Federation.

FLUFFY FUN: Stand-up comedian Gabriel Iglesias doesn't shy away from jokes about his girth, but there's more to his act than fat jokes. He's a giddy comedian an infectious grin and a talent for storytelling. His latest stand-up special, Gabriel Iglesias: I'm Not Fat, I'm Fluffy will air at 9 p.m. Sunday on Comedy Central, and an extended version of it will be released on DVD and on iTunes, Xbox LIVE Marketplace, Zune and the PlayStation Store on Tuesday. Tickets for his 2010 comedy tour (which will include stops in Raleigh and Charlotte in March) went on sale this week through his website, www.fluffyguy.com.

YO JOE! Sure, you could pick up this week's DVD or Blu-ray of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, the overblown live-action remake of the beloved 1980s cartoon series. But next week is the big treat for fans of Joe: the release of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero: The Complete Series, a hefty 17-DVD boxed set with all 95 episodes of the original series, plus tons of extras including interviews, documentaries, a fan film, public service announcements featuring the characters and archival toy commercials. The DVDs are packaged in a nifty replica foot locker along with a companion 56-page booklet, a "dog tag" 1-GB flash drive with two Joe comic book short stories on it, and rub-on tattoos.
