Election Roundup: Bethania keeps one, gains one

FORSYTH COUNTY

Bethania

Voters elected one incumbent and one newcomer to the town's board of commissioners, according to complete but unofficial returns.

Newcomer Brent S. Rockett led the voting with 64 votes, while incumbent Charlie Wolff gained the other available seat with 58 votes.

Out of the running were two other challengers: Karl A. Florian with 30 votes and Eli A. Anderson with five votes.

The board has five members and elects a mayor from among the five.

The current mayor, Deborah Stoltz-Thompson, was not up for election this year.

Lewisville

Challenger Fred Franklin will join five incumbents on the six-member Lewisville Town Council. Franklin is a former member of the town council. He and the other winners will serve two-year terms. Franklin finished with 706 votes, according to complete but unofficial results. The other winners were incumbents Roger Fowler and Larry Sowers each with 707 votes; Mike Horn with 773 votes; Ken Sadler with 731 votes; and Tom Lawson with 696. Challenger John Sangimino finished with 346 votes. Mayor Dan Pugh ran unopposed and had 817 votes.

Rural Hall

Voters elected one incumbent and one newcomer to the town council last night, according to complete but unofficial returns. Newcomer Ricky Plunkett led the voting for two seats on the town council, with 111 votes. Incumbent Herman C. Denny, who gained 99 votes, also won a seat on the four-member board.

Incumbent Dewhitt C. Neely received 64 votes.

Tobaccoville

Incumbent Robin Beck and newcomer Lori Shore-Smith were elected last night to the village council, according to complete but unofficial returns.

Beck received 131 votes, and Shore-Smith received 130 votes. A third candidate, Steve Wood, received 66 votes.

Mayor Keith Snow, running unopposed, received 165 votes.

Walkertown

Voters returned one incumbent and elected a newcomer to the town council, according to complete but unofficial returns. Newcomer Peggy Leight led the voting with 152 votes. Coming in second was incumbent Sarah Welch, who received 130 votes. Incumbent Marilyn Martin received 117 votes.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

Sparta

Voters returned a mayor and two town council members to office. All were unopposed.

In complete, but unofficial, results, Mayor John Miller received 46 votes.

Council members John Brady and Mike Parlier each received 43 votes.

ASHE COUNTY


Jefferson

Voters returned three aldermen to office yesterday, according to complete but unofficial results from the Ashe County Board of Elections. All were unopposed. Mark Johnston and Gwen Ashely each received 39 votes. Blueferd Eldreth received 36 votes.

Lansing

In the race for three open four-year seats on the Lansing board of alderman, voters picked incumbent Bill Cline with 35 votes; Mauvine Shepherd with 33 votes and recently appointed incumbent George Rembert III with 26 votes. Not winning seats were Dennis Trainor Jr. with 18 votes; Jeff Key with 9 votes; and incumbent Israel Church, with 3 votes.

Voters in Lansing also selected two people for two-year unexpired terms. Brenda Reeves, who was appointed to the seat recently and was the only person on the ballot, received 37 votes. A write-in candidate, Terry Paisley, apparently won a spot on the board with two votes. Election officials have to make sure he is eligible to serve.

West Jefferson

Two of three incumbent aldermen were returned to office in West Jefferson. Returning to the board are Calvin Green with 124 votes and Stephen Shoemaker with 114 votes. They'll be joined by Lester Mullis, who had 104 votes. Jerry McMillan lost his seat, with 88 votes. Other finishers were Tod Hale with 80 votes and Mack Ham with 67.

DAVIE COUNTY


Mocksville

Three incumbents won the race for seats on the Town of Mocksville Board of Commissioners.

Bill Foster received 86 votes, or 33.3 percent of the vote, according to complete but unofficial results. Lash Gaither Sanford Jr. received 83 votes, or 32.2 percent, and Richard Broadway won 82 votes, or 31.8 percent.

All three were running for a third term and were unopposed. Seven people voted for a write-in candidate.

Cooleemee

Two newcomers were elected to the Town of Cooleemee Board of Commissioners, beating out the incumbents.

Chris J. Branham received 115 votes, or 39.9 percent, according to complete but unofficial results. Charles W. Taylor received 111 votes, or 38.5 percent.

Earl B. Lester, who was running for his second term, received 32 votes. Fran Parker, who was running for a third term and served as the mayor pro tempore, received 29 votes.

Bermuda Run

A newcomer and an incumbent won seats on the Bermuda Run Town Council last night.

Ed Coley, an incumbent who represents District II, received 44 votes. R. Andrew Hewitt received 44 votes in District V. Both ran unopposed.

DAVIDSON COUNTY


Denton

The mayor of Denton just eked out another term, and one incumbent and one newcomer won two seats on the Town of Denton Board of Commissioners.

Mayor Scott Morris won 173 votes, according to complete but unofficial results. Kenny Small received 167 votes. Larry D. Ford received 14 votes.

Incumbent commissioner Deanna Chandler Grubb won 166 votes. Wayne Plaster, a newcomer, won 156 votes.

Mary Edwards Hoyle, received 143 votes. Incumbent Stewart Sexton had 101 votes, and William Craig Sigmon, a former commissioner, had 98 votes.

Lexington

John Walser won his second term as mayor last night, beating two challengers.

Walser received 1,016 votes, or 69.1 percent, according to complete but unofficial results. Bobby Dean Sweatt won 403 votes, or 27.4 percent, and Donnie R. King got 48 votes, or 3.27 percent.

In Ward I, two challengers fought over a seat vacated by Council Member Louise Miller, who didn't run for re-election. Ronald Reid won 136 votes, or 60.4 percent, while Janice Johnson Hunter got 88 votes, or 39.1 percent.

Incumbent Donnie McBride, who represents Ward 2, won 123 votes, or 96.9 percent. He ran unopposed.

Linwood Bunce won a seat in Ward 3 for Lexington City Council. Bunce was appointed earlier this year to fill the term of Victor Kiger, who died in April. Bunce won 216 votes, or 68.3 percent. Gary Fancy received 93 votes, or 29.4 percent, and Wayne Cassidy got seven votes, or 2.22 percent.

Wayne Allen, who represents Ward 4, ran unopposed and received 216 votes, or 98.2 percent.

Midway

A former mayor and two incumbents won three seats on the Midway Town Council last night.

Norman Wilkes, who was the town's first mayor when it incorporated in 2006, received 366 votes. Council Member Robin S. Moon won 340 votes, and Council Member John Byrum won 325 votes.

Betty L. Nifong, a former council member, received 165 votes.

Thomasville

Longtime Mayor Joe Bennett won another term, and five of seven incumbents won seats on the Thomasville City Council.

Bennett beat out three challengers, winning 1,357 votes, according to complete but unofficial results. Terry L. Hill came in second, with 534 votes. Earl Harrison received 409 votes, and Steven Leonard won 64 votes.

All seven seats were up on the Thomasville City Council. Two newcomers won seats on the council, including the former chief of the Thomasville Police Department.

Ronald S. Bratton, who retired as chief earlier this year, won 1,459 votes. Incumbent Scott Styers received 1,457 votes.

Raleigh York Jr. received 1,414 votes; Pat Harris Shelton received 1,413 votes; Neal Grimes won 1,320 votes; and David Yemm got 1,316 votes, all incumbents. Jackie Jackson was the only other newcomer to win a seat on the Thomasville City Council, getting 1,287 votes. Incumbents George Burton and Ricky K. Murphy lost, getting 1,279 votes and 1,261 votes, respectively.

Carl Shatley received 803 votes and Jay W. Browning got 715 votes.

Thomasville residents also voted on two charter amendments. A charter amendment providing for a four-year term for the mayor was overwhelmingly rejected, with 1,344 people voting against and 991 people supporting the amendment.

Another charter amendment that would have allowed staggered four-year terms for all seven members was also rejected. If approved, the four top-vote getters would get the first four-year terms in 2011.

Sixty-percent of voters, or 1,376 people, voted against the amendment, and 916 people, or 39.97 percent, voted for the amendment.

Wallburg

Allen L. Todd won another term as mayor last night and two incumbents easily won seats on the Wallburg Town Board of Commissioners.

Todd won 241 votes, according to complete but unofficial results. He beat out J. Leigh Gill, who received 104 votes.

Two seats were up for the Wallburg Town Board of Commissioners. Incumbent Steve Yokeley led with 290 votes. Commissioner Zane Hedgecock won 250 votes. Challenger Robert F. Motsinger received 102 votes.

STOKES COUNTY


Danbury

Wendi Uselton, a write-in candidate, won one of two seats on the Danbury Town Council. According to complete but unofficial results, Uselton had 30 votes. Also winning a seat was Olivia Nelson Shelton, who had 28 votes. Shelton and Uselton edged Rebecca Sullivan, who had 24 votes, and John Turbin, who had 16. In the mayoral election, Janet Whitt edged incumbent Jane Priddy Charleville by one vote, 30 to 29. The election was Whitt's first run for office.

King

Newcomers took the top prizes in King. Wesley Carter and Charles Allen knocked off incumbents Carolyn Byerly and Gray Southern.

Carter and Allen will serve four-year terms on the four-person board. Carter had 203 votes, and Allen had 191 votes. Byerly, who was on the council for 12 years, had 126 votes; and Southern, who has been on the board since 2005, had 148 votes.

Walnut Cove

Incumbent John Hodgkin finished with 182 votes, eight votes ahead of challenger Alma Childers, to win the mayoral race in Walnut Cove. Challengers Sharon Conaway and Charles Mitchell won seats as town commissioners with 198 votes and 151 votes, respectively, according to complete but unofficial results. They beat incumbents Debbie Cowens, who had 68 votes, and Kim Lewis, who finished with 114 votes. J. Elwood Mabe received 142 votes.

SURRY COUNTY


Dobson

Mayor Ricky Draughn narrowly defeated challenger Kennett Earnest yesterday to win re-election. Draughn had 132 votes, and Earnest had 128 votes in the nonpartisan election, according to complete but unofficial results.

J. Wayne Atkins and John D. Lawson were elected to two seats on the town's board of commissioners. Atkins led the six-candidate field with 140 votes, and Lawson had 109. Other candidates were: Ron Atkins, 97 votes; Kermit C. Draughn, 79; T. Jonathan Snow, 48; and Ted Ring, 28.

Elkin

Cicely McCulloch, incumbent Joe Walker and Terry Kennedy won four-year seats on the town's board of commissioners.

McCulloch led the four-candidate field in the nonpartisan election with 343 votes. Walker had 308 votes, and Kennedy had 283 votes, according to complete but unofficial results.

Incumbent Gambill Aldridge finished fourth with 275 votes.

Pilot Mountain

Incumbents Andrew French and Carolyn S. Boyles ran unopposed yesterday to win four-year terms to the town's board of commissioners.

French had 49 votes, and Boyles had 48 votes, according to complete but unofficial results.

WATAUGA COUNTY


Blowing Rock

Mayor J.B. Lawrence ran unopposed and was re-elected with 361 votes.

There were eight people running for three seats on the Blowing Rock Town Council. Winning seats were incumbent Tommy Klutz with 245 votes, Jim Steele with 230; and Doug Matheson with 205. Pat Fountain received 190 votes; Mike Kebelbeck, 187; George Sudderth, 174; Jerry Starnes, 157; and Gary Lee Smith, 40. Incumbents Barbara Ball and Keith Tester did not seek re-election.

Boone

Mayor Loretta Clawson won re-election yesterday, according to complete but unofficial results from the Watauga County Board of Elections. Clawson had 787 votes, while challengers Tim Wilson had 474 votes and John Mena, 237.

Jamie Leigh, who was appointed recently to fill the seat vacated when Liz Aycock moved, was elected to a full term with 937 votes. Also winning seats were incumbent Rennie Brantz with 884 votes and Andy Ball with 828 votes. Matthew Long with 510 votes; Harold Frazier, 492; Grant Holder, 189; and Thomas Wilhite, 62. Janet Pepin did not seek reelection.

WILKES COUNTY


North Wilkesboro

Robert Johnson, a North Wilkesboro town commissioner, will be the new mayor of North Wilkesboro after beating incumbent Mayor George Church yesterday, according to complete but unofficial results. Johnson had 280 votes to Church's 260. Former town commissioner Eric Williams finished third with 55 votes.

Two town commissioners were elected. Incumbent Debbie Ferguson had 311 votes and Bart Hayes had 277. Not winning seats were former commissioner Jimmy Foster, with 243 votes; Danny Anderson, 231; and Robert Cheek, 21.

Ronda

Three town commissioners were elected in Ronda, although the identity of at least one of them won't be revealed until write-in votes are examined today. Sam Foster received the most votes, with 75. A write-in candidate or candidates got 56 votes. Wanda Blackburn had 50 votes to get a spot on the commission. Kevin Reece got 29 votes, and Gene Fowler had 20 votes.

Wilkesboro

Nellie Hubbard Archibald and Gary Johnson were elected as council members. Archibald received 320 votes and Johnson got 305 votes. Andy Soots received 291 votes.

YADKIN COUNTY


Boonville

K. Scott Whitaker received 155 votes in defeating Richard Lasky to win the mayor's post. Lasky received 47 votes in the nonpartisan elections.

Incumbents Janet Matthews and Gerald Brown were re-elected to the town's board of commissioners. Matthew had 170 votes, and Brown had 158 votes. Russell Miller finished third with 63 votes.

East Bend

Incumbent Mayor Stewart Maples won re-election yesterday in the town's nonpartisan elections.

Maples led a three-candidate field with 60 votes. Denny Gray Lane was second with 44 votes, according to complete but unofficial results. A write-in candidate or candidates finished with 41 votes, and Matthew C. Wise was fourth with 12 votes.

Incumbents Earl Norman and Wanda Spillman Johnson and Albert G. Davis won seats on the town's board of commissioners. Norman finished first with 121 votes, Johnson was second with 97 votes and Davis was third with 82 votes. David Frederick finished fourth with 44 votes. Norman and Johnson will serve four-year terms, and Davis will serve a two-year term.

Voters also approved beer and mixed-drinks sales in the town. The referendum for beer sales passed 100-57. The referendum to allow the sale of mixed drinks passed 101-54.

Jonesville

Mayor Lindbergh Swaim ran unopposed to win re-election yesterday in the town's nonpartisan elections.

Swaim received 252 votes, according to complete but unofficial returns.

Andy Green and Danny Lewis won two seats on the town's board of commissioners. Green led the six-candidate field with 166 votes, and Lewis finished second with 143 votes. Other candidates tallies were: Incumbent Edna Martin, 115 votes; Tracy L. Wall, 104; Tommy Chappell, 97; and J. Arthur Burke Sr., 8.

Yadkinville

Incumbent Mayor Hubert Gregory received 62 votes to win another four-year term. Incumbents Phillip Ray Graham and Thomas "Eddie" Norman both received 59 votes to win re-election to four-year terms to the town's board of commissioners. All three ran unopposed.
